Forty-five complaint endured minutes later, the lights miraculously power back on. I look over my shoulder at Kai. His eyes are glassy, unfocused, and his pupils dilated.
I stand up. I already see Vera. She's heading in our direction, her large purse swaying at her side.
"So, I'm gonna head out. I'm riding with my one of my coworkers," she announces. Typical of Vera, to make her own plans. Not that I mind that much.
"Are you sure you're not riding your coworker?" someone says from behind me.
I turn around in disbelief. My mouth is slightly agape, and quite honestly I'm really shaken.
"Goodnight Kai," Vera says curtly and walks away.
"I'll have to apologize for that tomorrow," he murmurs.
"Give me your keys," I tell him. He struggles to fish them out of his boot, and I don't bother asking how they got there.
He walks himself to the passenger side without much trouble. He slides down in the seat.
"Put your seatbelt on," I remind him as I begin to pull out. He grunts but nonetheless does it.
He sleeps the whole drive back to his house.
When I wake him upon arriving, he rustles silently in the seat and walks the whole way squinting through one eye and leans back against the wall the whole elevator ride.
He finds his bed as soon as we walk through the door. He kicks off his shoes before falling onto the bed, and fast asleep.
Now that I get a moment to breathe, I get myself a glass of water. The cool liquid travels down my throat, instantly improving how I feel.
I sit in front of the large windows, just staring blankly ahead. Few cars past tonight. The bright lights begin to reduce to blurry specks, and soon it's completely dark behind my eyelids.
