Alex was the first to see that I had come up behind them while the others were facing the horde. She sighed relief and ran up to hug me.

"I thought we'd have to do this without you," she looked behind me at Carter and Maddie and then back to me, "Thomas said there was one guy, he said nothing about a girl."

"I didn't know about her either," Alex could see the dread in my face, "I said we'd keep them safe."

"And we will," she nodded, "just an extra pair or working hands," she turned back to the horde and the first few infected who had made their way inside. She pulled a dagger off of her belt and walked up beside Bradley who was already brandishing his knife. Thomas had noticed our presence by now and was walking over while the other two went to work on the horde.

He was looked at me with a sympathetic smile and put a hand on my shoulder.

"You okay?" He asked; I nodded, "Wanna fight this time?" He gestured towards my bat, "Best time to practise is when your with a group," I turned the bat in my hands, thinking.

"Sure." I would of had to start fighting back at some point and I supposed Thomas's logic was right, there's a big group who wouldn't let anything happen, it seemed almost perfect.

I heard a gun cock behind me and turned to see Carter, arm outstretched, gun pointing directly at the horde, shaking uncontrollably. It was obvious he hadn't a clue in the slightest of how to use the deadly weapon he held.

"This ought to be fun," Thomas sighed and started to walk towards the gun welding newbie. Before he left my side completely he put a hand on my shoulder, "You'll be fine, go and give them a hand," he nodded towards Alex and Bradley and went back to focusing on Carter.

I readied my bat and walked purposely towards Alex who seemed to be struggling with her side of the group - while Bradley was unnervingly fine. Alex glanced over at me and then straight back at the infected, noticing my presence but not letting it distract her. Some of the infected had noticed me too, and we're making their way, shuffling towards me. The one closest to me was a thing of nightmares; I think Alex was right when she called these things zombies.

The thing was getting too close for comfort, I had just a second to decide whether to take it out it let it take out me. I closed my eyes and swung the bat as hard at I could at its head, I felt it connect with the skull but instead of hitting a hard surface it was like plowing through dust. This one had obviously been infected for a while. It fell to its knees but it's arms were still reaching for me, I took the bat above my head and smashed it through the thing for good measure. I suppose I could of called that my first kill - if you considered them to be alive in the first place.

"Its just a game," Bradley appeared beside me and drove his knife into the skulls of the next few infected coming my way. "Each head is a ball, everytime you smash one it's a home run." He chuckled at his last statement.

"Shouldn't you get back to your gr-" I was cut off by a loud bang behind me. Carter has fired, it hit a couple of the infected near Alex.

"On that note," Bradley went back over to the group he had left unattended that was slowly making its way over to us. Bradley must of liked the challenge, armed with only a knife and letting the group build up before dealing with it. The guy either had a death wish or was too experienced to be just any old civilian before this whole thing broke out. My bet was on the first option - he had a damn death wish.

It was just a blur. Soon enough the horde had almost dwindled, with the three of us hitting as many as we could and Carter cleaning up the rest with his gun it was the biggest blood bath there was.

There was twelve left. All spread out, only just coming through the broken windows. They were a few feet away so it gave me, Alex and Bradley time to group up closer and ready ourselves. Of course Bradley stepped a little closer, just out of reach to toy with them. I heard carter cock the gun again after reloading and knew we were all ready. With one glance between me and Alex it started again, we unleashed on the horde. Smashing, stabbing, and beating anything close, and carter got the ones that were just out of reach.. but that wasn't all he got.

I didn't realise at first,  I had the last infected. I had to kill it. I was the last one to look over. I should of know what had happened by the bloodcurdling scream that came from Thomas's lips. I looked over to see Alex. On her knees. Hands gripping her side - the same shade as her crimson hair.
