I've seen instances where people use against James the fact that he was so arrogant and cocky that he really thought he could take Voldemort on without a wand.
Okay, look. Even Crabbe and Goyle are smart enough to know that without a wand to defend yourself, no one could possibly defeat the most powerful wizard ever.
And James wasn't dumb like those two boys- he was a really smart person. I mean, come on, he became a full blown Animagus at fifteen years old! He helped make the Marauder's Map! We know enough to know that James was smart!
And you really think that he thought he could beat Voldemort wandless? Of course not! NO ONE, not even someone really stupid, would think that!
He didn't have time to get his wand, he didn't have time to do anything except to tell Lily to take Harry and run! Because his family was what was on his mind, the people he loved. Not himself or what would happen to him.
He knew he would be dead within a matter of seconds, everyone in his position would know that. He wasn't thinking that he could beat Voldemort, he was thinking that maybe, just maybe, he could- in his own words- "hold him off!" Buy his wife and son just a little bit of time- a few seconds at most, but some time, nevertheless- to make an escape!
I don't think anyone actually believes that James taking Voldemort on wandless was him thinking he was "oh so great". I think that some people just refuse to acknowledge it for what it CLEARLY was- willingly surrendering his life for the ones he loved.
So please, don't go around using this argument unless you want to make a complete fool of yourself. Because it is so obviously not true. No one in their right minds would think they could defeat an evil dark wizard without any way to even use magic. That's stupid. No, James knew he was going to die, and he was okay with that, because it meant, if nothing more, giving his baby son and the girl he loved so much a chance. A chance to live, even though it meant that surely he would die.
He was okay with that. You know why? Because he loved Lily and Harry more than he loved himself.
So he was ready to die for them, and he knew he would. For him, that didn't matter, he didn't matter to himself. Lily and Harry were the ones that mattered to him.
That is true love.
