James was so lazy that he didn't even get a job and lived off of his family gold.

*sighs* Yes, he didn't get a job when he graduated, but if you really think about it there was a lot more to it.

Considering that upon arrest, Sirius Black didn't even get a freaking trial before getting sent to Azkaban, I think it's safe to assume that Ministry of Magic was just as useless as it was during the time Harry was at Hogwarts. Meaning that working for the Ministry probably didn't really make a difference in the war, unlike the Order of the Phoenix.

The Order was such a great way to help out during the war. It was a group of skilled wizards and witches that went on missions to directly interfere with Voldemorts reign of terror and help defeat him.

James Potter wasn't stupid, he was smart.  Really smart. He knew that being a full time member of the Order would make much more of a difference than working at the Ministry. He knew that the rest of the world will see him as unemployed and he knew it could tarnish his reputation, but he didn't care. What he was doing was much more important.

In conclusion, James was unemployed not because he was lazy, but because he was volunteering with a secret organization dedicated to defeating Voldemort and the Death Eaters, which he knew would make much more of an impact.
