“Out.”
After giving my blunt reply and a casual shrug of my shoulders, I brushed past the kitchen island and wandered over to the fridge, pulling out a bottle of water. My dad and Zacky turned on the stools they were sat on, their eyes following my every movement, and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
“Is that it?” My dad demanded. “Out? Is that all I get?”
Again, I shrugged. “Yep.”
“You were supposed to be home six hours ago, Midge!” He raised his voice. “I’ve been going out of my fucking mind!”
“I stayed at Ash’s!” I shouted back. “Jeez!”
He shook his head, clenching his jaw, and stood up. I thought, for just a moment, that he’d realised I was going to be difficult, and that he’d already given up with the argument, though he suddenly slammed his fist against the kitchen island, causing me to jump.
“Don’t lie to me!” He exclaimed. “What, you think I didn’t call around? I’ve spoken to Charlotte and Linds. They told me you were with Ronnie Radke.”
Unsure of how to reply to that, I merely shrugged, sipping at my water. Both he and Zacky seemed completely bemused by my calm demeanour, and it seemed to rile my dad up even more, as he stepped towards me, narrowing his eyes.
“You’ve been warned about Ronnie, Midge.” He said. “And I trust you not to lie to me. We don’t keep secrets in this family.”
My expression immediately darkened. “You do.”
It was almost as if those two words that had left my mouth made everything click in his mind. He suddenly seemed to understand the anger I’d held towards him, and the reason I’d been so off with him for the past four days—as if it wasn’t already obvious.
“So that’s what this is about?” He shook his head. “You’re getting back at me for the other day, or…”
“No. I’m not.” I snapped. “I’m not that fucking petty. I went out with my cousins and our friends to a party and I just so happened to bump into Ronnie Radke. It wasn’t planned, but when he invited Ash and I to another party, I wanted to go. What, exactly, is the problem with that?”
“You—‘’
“Are you serious?” Zacky suddenly interrupted my dad’s retort. He’d been so quiet, sat behind my dad, that I almost forgot that he’d even been there. He suddenly stood up from the stool and walked over to stand by my dad. Having two muscular, tattooed men staring down at me, was admittedly pretty intimidating.
I pretended not to be fazed by it, cocking an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”
“I fucking dragged you away from Radke in that diner for a reason, Midge!” Zacky yelled, causing me to roll my eyes. He didn’t seem particularly pleased by that, as he narrowed his own eyes. “Hey, look at me!”
“Why?!” I also yelled. “So I can stand here and watch you play the Saint Zacky act again? How many damn times do I have to thank you for that? Why are you even here, yelling at me, huh? The last time I checked, you’re not my dad. Unless more secrets are being kept from me, that is!”
