Despite the fact that I’d agreed to keep things normal with Zacky, I couldn’t stop myself from avoiding him as much as possible over the next two weeks

It had been easy to, at first, as I found myself getting sick a few days after we’d agreed to forget about everything. I knew he’d come round to see my dad, but I’d thankfully been cooped up in my room, buried inside my bed, and he’d luckily not come to see me once. It was a little harder once I’d recovered, as the family had decided to take advantage of what time Charlotte and Linds had left of Summer break, and there were more family gatherings than there ever had been since I’d moved here. Zacky always acted normal around me and made conversation with me, and I tried my hardest to do the same, though I wasn’t finding it easy.

As well as the time I’d been spending with the family, I’d also been spending a lot of time with mine and my cousin’s friends. I’d seen Ash, Adam and Dylan a lot over next couple of weeks—Dylan especially. It had become a regular occurrence for us to meet up, just the two of us, and I’d started to realise that he really did take my mind off of Zacky a lot.

It didn’t surprise me, when I woke up the morning after a family barbecue, that I had a text from Dylan, asking me if I wanted to meet up with him. I didn’t hesitate to agree, quickly rolling out of bed and making my way into my bathroom. The sooner I was around someone that could easily distract me, the less time I had to sit and think about Zacky.

I got ready as quickly as possible and then made my way downstairs, only calling a brief goodbye to my dad as I left the house. Upon receiving another text from Dylan, asking me to meet him at the beach, I climbed into my car and pulled out of the driveway. As I drove, I was surprised to find that I was somewhat excited to see him. He was genuinely one of the nicest people I’d ever met, and I honestly did enjoy his company, but I knew that part of me was excited to see him so that I could take my mind off of things. So that, for a few hours, I could pretend that I wasn’t falling harder for my dad’s best friend who would never return any feelings of a romantic nature. I knew, however, that I had to be careful, and not get too caught up in what I was doing. I didn’t like to think of it as using Dylan, as I did enjoy myself around him, but I knew I had to keep in mind not to accidentally cross any lines.

With the sun beating down on everything like usual, the beach was crowded, and it was hard to find a place nearby to park up. I eventually pulled in to a space after what seemed like ages, and I appeared to have kept Dylan waiting. Wandering down onto the beach, I managed to spot him amongst the many people, already lying back on the sand with his eyes closed.

“Hey.” I said as I dropped down beside him, causing his eyes to fly open.

“Oh, hey.” He grinned back at me. He sat up, reaching out and pulling me into a hug. “How are you?”

Smiling, I leaned into him and squeezed him tightly. There was something about Dylan’s hugs that was comforting, but for me, it was very much in a brotherly way. As soon as his arm started to fall down to my waist, and he started to lie back, pulling me so that my head fell onto his chest, I told myself quickly that I needed to pull away.

“How about we go grab a drink or something?” I suggested, pulling away from him and standing up, “It’s pretty crowded around here…we could find somewhere quieter to sit and talk…”
