Considering how much this day, as a whole, had dragged, I thought I’d be pretty good at waiting by now. For some reason, after my conversation with Marie, I’d grown eager to know what this Ronnie guy was like. I guess I just wanted to work out whether I really would be staying at his place tonight, because if upon meeting him, I decided he was a bit too strange, I needed to have a backup plan as to where I was going to spend the night.
The two hours seemed to pass by excruciatingly slow. I’d moved from the service counter to sitting at a table in one of the booths, and I did everything I could to keep my mind off how slowly the minutes were ticking by. There was only so long that I could spend clicking in and out of the different apps on my phone before I began to grow bored and my phone started to get low on battery, and I sighed and turned it off, wanting to reserve its last bit of battery life until I could find somewhere to put it on charge.
From then on, I spent my time subtly people-watching. It had always been somewhat of a fascination to me, watching different people come and go. Eventually, however, more people started to leave and less people started to arrive, and it wasn’t long before the diner was pretty much dead. There was quiet music playing in the background, but other than that and the occasional sound coming from whatever Marie was doing, there was virtually no noise in here.
I fixed my gaze out of the window, watching the people on the pier. It seemed to be a calm evening in Huntington Beach, as compared to the amount of people that had been on the pier earlier, there was hardly anyone left. My stare quickly became out of focus as my thoughts became louder, and I allowed my mind to wander over how my day had gone. All in all, I was pretty proud of myself. For someone who had never actually left the town I’d grown up in, I thought I’d handled travelling to a whole different country on my own pretty well. The entire experience had been daunting and nerve-wracking, but I was here now. I had one more big thing to get over and done with, before I could really know what was going to happen next.
I’d been so deeply wrapped up in my thoughts that the sound of the diner’s door opening had me jolting in my seat a little. I immediately snapped my head up to watch the person that walked in, and instead of quickly looking away at the realisation that it wasn’t this Ronnie guy, my gaze followed him as he walked up to the counter. The clock on the wall read that it was only just coming up to five-thirty, but that didn’t mean this guy wasn’t Ronnie. Perhaps, to my luck, he had decided to show up a little earlier today.
Whoever the guy was ordered a burger and a drink from Marie and paid her, his voice only just above a murmur. I tried so hard to listen out and hear if they were talking to each other in a particularly friendly way, but from what I could hear, it sounded like just a regular exchange between a waitress and a customer. Also, Marie had promised to inform me when Ronnie came in, and she’d not yet done so. I sighed to myself, impatiently.
For whatever reason, I still didn’t look away. I didn’t make my staring obvious as the guy turned around, but I kept my eyes on him, luckily managing to quickly look away before he glanced at me. I waited until he’d made his way to a seat and sat down, before looking back at him and properly studying his appearance.
What I found odd, as I stared at everything from his short black hair and green eyes to the tattoos covering his arms, was how familiar this guy was to me. It was ridiculous, I knew, because I’d never been to Huntington Beach since my mum had left with me and there was no way I could know anybody here, but I really did feel like I recognised him from somewhere. A deep frown made its way onto my face as I continued to stare and tried to work out where I’d seen him before; perhaps he looked a lot like someone I knew, but as I tried my hardest to work it out, it only became more and more confusing to me.
