The car door softly shut. I pressed my head against the glass, staring out of the window with heavy eyes as Ash approached her house. She stopped on the porch, turning to wave at me and my dad, before she quickly disappeared inside.

The silence that filled the car was one I’d been dreading. The ride home from Palm Springs had been a surprisingly tranquil two hours that both Ash and I had slept through the majority of. The radio had provided a quiet background noise that had helped to ease the tension, but with it now shut off, and with Ash now home, I knew that small amount of peace was gone.

I tried to ignore my dad’s blatant stare that was pinned on me, hoping that my closed eyes would be enough to convince him I’d gone straight back to sleep. My head was aching with the worst hangover I’d experienced in a long time, and a lecture about my behaviour hadn’t made it onto the list of things I wanted right now.

“Look at me, Midge,” My dad’s voice suddenly cut through the silence. His tone was surprisingly calm, but that worried me more than it reassured me.

I continued to ignore him, my head still rested against the window and my eyes still closed. I could feel my plan absolutely failing, but I was still willing to put up a fight.

Midge!” My dad then exclaimed, grabbing hold of my arm and pulling it away from where I was using to shield my face from the sun.

I immediately ripped it out of his grasp, glancing over my shoulder at him with tired eyes. “What?”

“We’re going to talk about last night,” He said with a shrug. “Don’t think that having a hangover gets you off the hook. It’s your own fault that you feel like shit.”

I scowled. “Can we at lease go home first?”

For a second, I thought he was about to protest, but he seemed opposed to the idea of arguing with me whilst we were still parked in Ash’s driveway. He heaved a sigh, starting the engine and reversing out. The silence returned as he drove out of the street.

It was only a short drive home – ten minutes at the most – and I spent it inside my head, trying to work out just how I would talk my way out of this one. Misbehaving in Huntington Beach around the Avenged Family was one thing, but doing so in front of my dad’s parents was another. There was a world of difference between them and my laidback uncles who pretended to not find my behaviour hilarious for the sake of my dad.

Too soon for my liking, he was pulling up in our own driveway and climbing out of the car. I followed with angst and rubbed at my forehead as I waited for him to unlock the front door. Our house was both a relieving and frustrating sight; relieving that I was away from my grandparents, or grandmother, at least, but frustrating because I could have done with spending more time away from Huntington Beach.

I eyed the staircase, feeling as though my bed was coaxing me upstairs, but my dad wandered through to the kitchen and gestured over his shoulder for me to follow him. Kicking my shoes off, I pushed the front door shut and then trudged into the kitchen with reluctance.

We seemed to adopt the spaces we always did; me sat at one of the stools at the kitchen island as my dad hovered close by and prepared food. He pulled two bottles of water from the fridge, sliding one towards me and unscrewing the cap of his own. I merely held mine to my head to cool me down.
