I wasn't too surprised by the exquisite inside after what I'd seen of the outside.

I stared around with wide eyes as the front door shut behind me, and Jason's footsteps echoed through the foyer as he walked round to stand in front of me.

For a moment, he seemed to just stand on the spot and silently stare down at me. I couldn't meet his gaze, my own pinned firmly on the wooden floor, but the silence had me glancing up ever so slightly to study his expression. He quickly shook his head, almost as if to rid himself of his thoughts, before he stepped away from me and opened a door to his left.

"Come sit down..." He said, gesturing a hand into the room.

I didn't want to sit down. My adrenaline was still pumping through my veins to the point where I knew I wouldn't be able to sit still, and I'd just be fidgeting constantly in my seat. I didn't, however, want to ruin things already by being difficult, so I silently followed him into the room.

More silence fell between us. Jason stayed stood as I carefully lowered myself onto one of the two large sofas in the centre of the room. I found myself pressing my body right into the very corner somewhat vulnerably, and I was almost tempted to sit on my hands to stop myself from fidgeting. My eyes stared around, taking in every single thing—every little detail around me. Whatever life Jason was living was very obviously different from the one I’d lived in England, and it left me feeling out of place.

As my gaze wandered around, it eventually met with Jason’s. At some point, whilst I’d been lost in my thoughts, he’d perched himself on the very edge of an arm chair. He was now leaning forward, his elbows rested against his knees as he clasped his hands together in front of his face. His eyes did not once move from me.

“I’m sorry…I know I’m staring.” He murmured, and he dragged a hand slowly over his face, “You just…you look so much like me.”

I gave a single nod in response. There was no denying what he’d said was true, but it wasn’t the first thing I’d expected him to come out with. His staring was making me want to shift on the spot and hide away from the situation.

Before I could grow too uncomfortable, I focused my attention on the large clock in the corner, its rhythmic ticking loud enough to echo through the room. My eyes followed its pendulum as it swung from side to side, and I found it, in that moment, to be somewhat calming.

“H-how?” Jason’s voice suddenly brought me out of my thoughts again. “How did you…you know…how did you find out?”

My stare moved from the clock to his face, and I exhaled a deep breath. I knew I couldn’t hide from my situation anymore. I’d come to Huntington Beach to find my dad, and I’d done exactly that. But I felt like it had taken way longer than a few days to get to where I was right now. In just that short space of time, my life had completely changed, and I’d cried about it more than I’d cried about anything in my life. I felt like I was still too drained to talk, and yet I didn’t really have any choice.

“I came home from work one night…” I started to speak, staring down, “My mum was passed out drunk…like always. I was used to coming home and finding her like that, so it didn’t surprise me. Except that particular night, I guess in her drunken state, she got all these boxes out that I’d never seen before…”
