PERSPECTIVE {Barry}
I did it. Well, I didn't. Joe basically did it for me. But hey, I made it here, so.
That's what matters.
We make it to the top of the stairs, and there I see my whole big set up that I made in 10 seconds. That's one perk of being a speedster. I can make this happen in that amount of time.
I look back at Iris who has a smile across her whole face. This fills me with joy, because my actions made her happy. I can't even believe that this is really happening. We met merely hours ago, and now we are already on a date?
"Barry, this is so amazing! I--I love it!" She says, pulling her hand away from mine, but then hugging me in return. I wrap my arms around her tightly. I rest my chin on her head, and she lays her head on my chest. We stay like this for about a minute, and then we both slowly pull away from each other.
"Dinner is served." I say, walking over to the table. I reveal the dinner, which is a T-bone steak with a side of baked potatoes and asparagus. I pull Iris's chair out for her, and she sits down. I push her chair back in for her, and she scoots the rest of the way. I sit myself down, and un-wrap my utensils. I look up at Iris, and she is already digging into her food.
"So, Barry, you work with my dad, I hear?" Iris asks, after swallowing her food.
"I do. I mean, he's my boss. We cross paths occasionally at the building." I say, eating some potato.
"Is he.." Iris starts. I already know where she's going, so I butt in.
"Loud? Mean? Annoying? All of the above?" I blurt out.
"Yeah, those are the words." She laughs. I'm glad she can acknowledge her dad is a jerk.
"I can here him shouting from my lab upstairs. He's downstairs." I laugh. Iris starts cracking up. She is so adorable in this moment, and in every moment.
"I mean, whenever I'm trying to take a nap and he comes home early from work, he always shouts when he walks through the door." She says, then takes a bite of some more food.
"That is, well, interesting." I say.
"Barry, listen to me. He just shouts. He doesn't say anything, he just shouts at the top of his lungs. For absolutely no reason." Iris is cracking herself up. I start to laugh myself, because thinking about Joe doing that is so stupid. I can barely breath, and I can tell she can't either. But, I quickly catch my breath. Another perk of being a speedster.
"Okay, why would he be so stupid?" I manage to get out.
"I don't know, that's the thing!" She says in her laughter. I am afraid to take another bite, because I'm worried I'll start laughing and spit it all over the place. Oh well. I stick some more food in my mouth.
I always like to mix all my food together in my bites, and I've never really had anyone to tell me it's gross. I grew up alone; my mother killed and father falsely in jail. He was accused of murdering her. But, I know it wasn't him. Just nobody would believe me, because I was an 11 year old boy who sad he saw a blur come and shove his hand through her heart.
Yes, I saw that.
No, I'm not crazy, I swear.
After Iris and I settle down after talking about Joe, I figure it's my turn to ask a question.
"So, what do you do when you aren't working?" I ask, trying not to sound like a doofus.
"Well, I am big into movies, and TV shows. I also like to read." Iris says, then taking her last bite of baked potato.
"Interesting. What kind of things do you watch?" I continue the conversation.
"Well, I love Disney movies, and I also love to get a good laugh watching rom-coms." She says. I'll take note of that for a movie night.
"Disney is awesome, I have to agree. I've actually never seen a rom-com before." I admit. She looks at me like I'm crazy.
"Barry, you have NEVER seen a rom-com?" She says in disbelief.
"I have never." I shrug.
"We have to watch one." She smiles.
"If you insist." I say.
"They are perfect for nights like these." She says, looking around at the night sky.
"Isn't it such a beautiful view from up here?" I say, walking over to the ledge. Iris gets up, and stands next to me.
"Gorgeous. You can see all of Central City from up here." She says, her eyes getting lost in the night sky. We stand next to each other for a while, looking into the distance. Iris's arms dangle at her side, and I reach for her hand, grabbing it. She grabs my hand back, and then she leans her head onto my shoulder. This feels so magical, like in all the movies.
The perfect view of the city, the perfect dinner, the perfect girl. Then I think to myself,
What always happens after this? And it hits me.
The kiss.
Well, how am I supposed to know she wants it too? I mean, I think we've been having a great night. She seems to have been liking it. She was engaging in conversation, and making them too.
I think I should do it.
I turn my head and look at Iris, who is still resting her head on me. She looks up at me, and I gently place my hands on her face. She gets the message instantly. She wraps her arms around me, and I slowly pull her in for the kiss. Her face is warm, and the way she kisses me makes me feel so, well, happy. I gently stoke her face while my lips lay on hers, and we kiss for a few moments, before we slowly separate from each other.
"That was..." Iris starts, and she can't even finish.
"Magical? Wonderful? Amazing?" I jump in.
"Those are the words." She laughs. I wrap my arms around her in a tight hug, and she embraces me back. After our magical moment under the stars, I take Iris's hand and we walk back down the stairs and to the car. I open the door for her, and she gets in. Then, I go to my side of the car and hop in. I start to drive back to her house.
"Thank you so much Barry. This has been one amazing night." Iris says.
"Anything for you." I smile.
"You're too sweet." She says, looking over at me. I feel her eyes rested on me.
"Thank you, Iris." I smile, briefly looking over at her, then back at the road.
We shared some silence on the drive back home, but I only think that's because we are both tired.
I pull into her driveway, and park the car. I get out, and walk Iris up to the door.
"Thank you again, Barry." She smiles.
"You're welcome." I say.
I wonder, should I kiss her again? I shake that thought away, and open the door for her. She walks inside, and I see her turn back and look at me for a brief second.
And guess what?
She's smiling.
