Joan's lips parted. Never in her life had she heard such beautiful words. Beautiful words coming from a man. An earl.
"Thank you for those words " Joan said wiping the tear that rolled down her cheek "they were beautiful."
"Everything is beautiful if it makes you happy" Hugh said and smiled.
Joan nodded, then smiled "I'm feeling much better now."
Hugh winked at her, then said "now let's talk about something else."
Joan widened her eyes "yes!"
"Hmmph?"
"Lord Hugh let's talk about your family" Joan requested.
Hugh considered it "as you wish."
They walked back to their seats as Hugh said "I have a younger sister and a mother."
"Sister?" Joan asked and her eyes lit up "how's she? What's her age? Her interests-"
"Yes! One minute Lady Joan!" Hugh said silencing her.
Joan clamped her mouth shut."My sister is Kate. Nineteen years of age. And yes really, an invigorated person. One who's cheerful all the time. One who just wants fun. And one who always reads gothic novels. Er the lurid ones."
"Oh I would love to meet her!" Joan said clasping her hands.
"As you wish milady" Hugh said and called for the butler.
The butler arrived within the space of two seconds.
"My lord?" Called out the butler.
"Would you please send for Kate?" Hugh requested.
"Sure my lord."
As the butler left the room, Hugh whispered "be careful..."
"Of?" Joan asked.
Hugh opened his mouth, but then closed it again"you'll realise. Soon."
Kate appeared soon enough.
And with the smile Kate supplied, Joan was sure that the siblings were ridiculously similar.
