I grabbed chicken wire. Lots and lots of spare chicken wire. Loading up the truck with wooden stakes and the wire, I knew to keep you safe and keep you here with me, you would need a fence. A bit of an eyesore, if you ask me, but necessary. It was getting dark now, which meant I must hurry to have the fence built before nightfall completely hit the Outback.

I saw the fear in your eyes when you heard the car as you scrambled up a tree to one of the highest branches of the Desert Oak Tree.

I slowed down just beneath the tree as my eyes remained on the ground rather than up at you. My heart fluttered, knowing that your eyes were staring in my direction.

Hammering out all of my aggression, I pushed the wooden stakes firmly into the ground as I wrapped the wiring around the stakes. Every couple of feet, I roared up the car's engine again that seemed much louder in the Outback than in an obnoxiously loud city. The car's load became lighter and lighter as I kept up the pace to finish the fence before it got too dark. As the sun dipped down, the air became much cooler as my breath let out a frigid frost caused by condensation.

After I finished, I paused in waiting. Waiting for you to climb down from the tree and sleep inside for the night. In a short-lived moment of doubt, I thought you would never come back inside.

I lit a cigarette as I waited, the smoke warming up my insides as I continued to wait as the dark now enveloped our shadows and swallowed them whole.
