TWELVE
During my lesson my Vaeril the next day, he snapped at my pouting. I glared at him. Couldn't I shout OFF WITH HIS HEAD! like the Queen of Hearts did in Alice in Wonderland as I was a Princess to Elves? I debated on doing it, just to see what his reaction would be. I grinned at the thought which made him look at me wearily and check the sky through the glass roof above us. It was slightly amusing to see he, who was nine-hundred-and-seventy-six years older than my twenty-three, be weary of me. Unfortunately, he being weary, caused him to snap at me more often, which in turn, made me angry that he was taking it out on me.
I jumped as the windows rattled against the gale of sudden wind.
"Calm yourself!" he snapped.
I clenched my jaw to prevent myself from snapping at him. We both jumped as the slam of wind shattered the glass above us. Letting loose a girly scream, I instinctively wrapped myself into a ball, a moment later, a body was over me. Opening my eyes a moment later, I glanced in Vaeril's direction to see that he had ducked and was using his wings to protect himself from the falling glass. That meant it was Haemir covering me, since Edyrm hadn't given an order as to who was to do what today, all three – Haemir, Eltaor, and Al – had come to my training with Vaeril today.
Glancing at Eltaor and Al showed Eltaor using his large body to shield Al against the wall against the sharp sharps of glass. As Haemir moved off me once he was sure that was the last of the falling glass, I, too, stood.
I felt my eyes widen as I stared from Vaeril to the glass above as Haemir moved over to Vaeril. The glass on the ceiling was only broken in a circle exactly above where Vaeril had been sitting. It was so eerily accurate, I wanted to throw up. Looking back to Vaeril showed that most the glass had pierced his wings, and that there were a couple on his left arm that he'd used to shield himself before he could swig his wing over. All the glass from above had been aimed at him. There were very few pieces that missed him, and those that did looked like daggers as they stood up right from having pierced the ground with the force they'd been pushed with.
Feeling my stomach roll, I couldn't hold it any longer, threw up. A second later, a pair of small hands were holding my hair back as I threw up everything I'd had at breakfast. If he wasn't as quick as he had been, Vaeril might have had one of those pieces of glass cut into his brain, or heart. I felt another roll, but my stomach had nothing left, so instead I started dry heaving. Thankful to the water and the voice that told me just to wash out the taste and spit it out on the floor before taking an actual drink.
It was only once I'd taken the water as an actual drink and downed it, that I was lifted and moved to lean against the wall, it was only then that I saw it had been Haemir, that it was now Eltaor removing the glass from Vaeril's body. I felt another roll at the sight and turned my gaze away, meaning that I was now looking at a worried Al.
"You okay, Shorna?" she asked, her voice gentle.
"I'm... okay, I'm okay," I told her as Haemir placed his hand on my stomach and murmured a couple of words that I didn't catch. But as my stomach settled, I was grateful. "Thank, Haemir."
"Your welcome, Shonra. I'm going to help Eltaor, tell Alioene if you feel any pain or discomfort, okay?"
"Okay," I replied, knowing I wouldn't.
"Promise me."
Damn. "I promise I'll call you if I'm in pain, and if I'm in discomfort, I'll sit it out until you've finished healing Vaeril."
Slowly, he gave a quick nod before going over to Vaeril. It was only a second later that I heard a new brush of footsteps.
Kharis spoke. "What happened this time?"
Eltaor reported everything that happened. I was surprised they were all speaking English for once.
"Your a fool, huanth kesir," Kharis snapped at Vaeril before coming over and kneeling in front of me. "How are you, Daja?"
"I'm sorry," I said.
"It wasn't your fault. That idiot over there wanted to push your buttons, and did so too well, to see how well you could hold your anger before you snapped."
"He did it on purpose?" I asked, starting to feel angry again, but the moment I did, I heard the edges of the broken glass sing as the wind pushed at it. Vaeril, Eltaor, and Haemir looked up at the noise.
Taking a deep breath, I told myself to calm down. A thought made me chuckle, looked at Kharis who had a raised brow looking at me, I said. "At least I know how to make myself angry."
