THIRTEEN

Once Vaeril was healed, thanks to Haemir, he apologised, as though that would make me forgive him. Yeah, sure. Not! But Vaeril did have one point I needed to know. I needed to understand what my moods did. My anger caused wind, my fear and panic had caused heavy rain and thunder and lighting.

And then he'd gone on about how, since I was pissed, it was the best time to do a test. Then he'd disappeared, then reappeared with a plant. It was scary to see the closer Vaeril got to me, the more dead the plant got. But once he started walking backwards, it became healthy again. But, at the same time, he warned me that if he left it next to me while I was feeling how I was a period of time, the plant wouldn't revive. Ever. Even another elf's magic wouldn't revive it. And that was scary.

Kharis seemed to see how much it disturbed me because he changed the subject. "Edyrm spoke to me about wanting more guards."

I nodded.

"May I ask why?"

"Because apart from Aloiene, I'm the only female here."

He blinked at that. As though I'd surprised him. "Is that the only reason?"

I blinked back innocently. "What other reason could there be?" Apart for hoping that one of the females will have enough scars that she won't care for Edyrm and love him?

He raised a brow at me as though he didn't believe me. But when I gave him nothing but a confused, innocent look, he sighed.

"I've called for several of both sex's from all the races you do not have yet in your guard. To make it fair to all the races, you are to choose one from each."

"Sure. Sounds fair."

"And how will you house them?"

"Well, there's this thing called bunking–"

"You really want more guards?"

I nodded. "I want friends." And I didn't realise how true that was until that moment. I wanted friends. I wanted people I could talk and laugh with like I did Edyrm, Haemir, Eltaor, and Al. And I wanted my friends happy, not that I'd tell him that.

Sighing, Kharis grumbled. "It's probably for the best. The other Coronal' were complaining that the guards you had were only Wood; Moon; and Star."

"So if I have three, that means I'll have to choose another six? Since there are nine races?"

Kharis laughed. "No, you'll only have to choose another five. We aren't counting the drow."

Thank God, I thought with a sigh of relief, there would be never ending rain otherwise.
