The constant sound of boots hitting the ground outside the door seemed like it would never stop. I couldn't help but shake in the corner I was sitting in, my body started to tense up due to how paranoid I was getting. I started curling up into a little ball, turning away from the doctor and facing the wall. "Don't be afraid." I heard him say, I could hear him approach me. With each step my body only tensed up more.. I couldn't see what he was doing but I could feel his movements. I could feel him kneel down next to me and look over at me. "It's gonna be okay in here, I'll protect you." I felt his hand extend out towards me. I flinched at his gesture, I don't know why I did it, but it only made me hide myself more.
049 sighed and sat down against the wall beside me, his body touching my orange jumpsuit. I couldn't believe it. I mean, not that I didn't mind the company, or him being so close to me but, usually if he touches someone they... die. He laid his arm on my leg and gently massaged it and tried to reassure me that everything was okay. "Don't be afraid, it'll be okay, I'll protect you." He kept saying, I calmed down a little bit but I was still curled up in the corner. I pushed myself off the wall and laid my head on 049's shoulder. He was shocked by what I did, I could feel him looking down at me I could feel a sense of surprise on his face, its like, I could see his face behind his mask.
Silence enveloped the room, but the constant footsteps outside the room still kept ringing out every now. My body began to relax as I soon realized that I've been curled up in this ball what seemed like hours but what could've only been a few minutes. "Are you feeling better?" He asked, I was taken by surprise by his question and I couldn't help but look away from him. "Yeah, I guess.." I answered. He could tell I was lying to him, both by the way I was still shaking and the way I wasn't looking at him. "You can tell me if you're not, after all. I am a doctor." He answered. I looked up at him and then back away, I let out a sigh then answered. "I know but, I just.." I couldn't find the words to say, my mind was everywhere. I was locked in the room with a guy who killed many other Class D Personnel before me, and why am I not dying when he touches me? I had so many questions rushing through my head that I just couldn't think straight.
"Just can't think?" He asked. I gasped at his question and then let out a deep breath. "Yeah, I just can't get my head on right," I then took a look up at him. He was looking up at the ceiling, I didn't know if his eyes were open or not, I couldn't see them for the hood he wore covered them. I could only see the tip of his iron mask sticking out. "Why haven't you killed me?" I asked, cold, emotionless. "Hmm?" He looked down at me. His gray eyes locking with mine. "Why.. didn't.. you.. KILL ME!?" I yelled. 049 didn't flinch when I yelled at him, he only looked at the ground then back up at me. "I didn't sense the disease in you, therefore I spared you..." He spoke quietly. "OH BULLSHIT!" I yelled, I was mad for some reason. I don't know why but I was really pissed with 049.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU KILL ME WHEN ME AND YOU LOCKED EYES THE FIRST TIME AROUND!?" 049 still didn't flinch to my anger. He was just plainly staring at me. I could start feeling tears rolling down my face, I was more sad then angry at this point. For some reason I wanted to know why I really wasn't dead. Why his touch didn't "cure" me. I didn't break eye contact with him, but I could see his hand come towards my face and wipe the tears from my cheek. I stayed staring at him, my hands balled up into fist for some reason ready to punch something. "WHY DIDN'T YOU KILL ME DAMMIT!"
I punched into his chest after each word, "WHY! DIDN'T! YOU! KILL! ME!?" I broke down into his chest and starting sobbing, I felt his arms envelop me in a hug. "I can't cure people with a pure heart," I heard him whisper into my ear. I tried to stop sobbing but it only mad me cry more. "You are immune to my touch because your heart is pure, you accept and love everyone, even if they don't accept you back." I couldn't stop crying, I just sat there, being held by 049.
After I finally calmed down a bit, 049 let me go and handed me a tissue out of his belt. "Thanks.." I said quietly. I wiped my tears and blew my nose into it. "Are you okay now..?" He asked quietly. I looked over at him, "Oh, yeah, I'm okay.. Sorry I hit you so hard." I tucked my head in my knees and let out a huge breath. He chuckled, "Don't sweat it love, I've dealt with worse back in my day." I looked over at him. "Back in your day?" I asked him. "Well I was a doctor after all. You think this plague doctor is just a name given to me?" He asked me back, "Well, no but.." He only laughed. "I used to treat people back in the 15th century for the Great Pestilence or more commonly known as the plague, one night I was walking home from the town square when a man jumped out of the alley and stabbed me in the neck and chest repeatedly. I was bleeding out heavily but I could feel him somehow stitch my mask to my face and that night, something in me... Changed... I went deep underground, swearing never to come back out into the light again until about the mid 20th century. The Foundation found me wandering the sewer system below England and so, here I am."
He looked at the ground and chuckled darkly. "I'm only here because I couldn't cure that man's daughter. She was so innocent, before the plague she was the joy of the town, bringing happiness to everyone. She didn't deserve to be brought up in a world like that." He then looked over at me, my face, in shock. "You remind me a lot of that little girl. A heart full of love and joy. Wants to love everyone for who they are on the inside and not on the outside." He sighed, "I wanted to save that little girl so bad but, the disease got to her before I could and... I just couldn't save her." He looked away from me, and once again... Silence enveloped the room. "Hey... 049?" I asked. "Hmm?" He didn't look up at me, he kept looking away from me. "Please look at me.." I said, he looked over my way. His hood still covering most of his face. "Do you have a name besides 049 or The Plague Doctor?" I asked him, he looked away from me then looked back at me, "... Samuel... Samuel Wright.." "I'm sorry.." He glanced up at me. "For?" He asked. "That you couldn't save that girl, she seemed like a really great friend of yours." He shrugged it off, "It's okay, I have another friend now." I gave him a smile and I could feel him shooting me a smile back.
The door to the containment area slung open but there was no one standing there, me and Samuel kept watching the door for someone to enter but no one did. "So uh, do we leave and get out of here?" I asked. "It's best we do, the longer we're sealed up in a cornered room. The worse off we are." He answered me. He helped me up to my feet and we walked out into the brightly lit hallway. Unsure of where to go, we stood in the bright hall. Deciding on where to begin our travels in this facility.
