"This is a croqueta," Mike explained, holding up the small food item to Willa.
It was Thanksgiving and a whole bunch of people were soon to arrive to celebrate the holiday. Mike took it upon himself to feed his granddaughter lunch while his wife and daughter set up outside for the large meal.
"What's in it?" Willa asked, wiping the pool water off her nose as she swung her legs on the tall chair she sat on.
"It's ham. I promise you, it's delicious," Mike stated, laughing lightly when Willa shrugged and took the food into her hand, taking a big bite.
She instantly smiled at the taste, shoving the rest into her mouth, making her cheeks puff out, before reaching for a second one.
"Slow down there, chipmunk," Mike teased, pulling the plate away from the girl's reach. "Swallow that bite and then you can have another," he promised, watching Willa slowed her chews down and swallow the first croqueta, receiving her second one as promised.
"Grandpa," she began to say, taking another bite.
"Yes, sweetheart," Mike smiled, tossing some chunks of ham down to the dogs sitting by their chairs.
"Is people going to like me tonight?"
"Of course!" The man said, looking right into the grey eyes of his granddaughter, "why wouldn't they?"
"'Cause I'm new. They don't know me."
"I didn't know you before and now we're good friends, right?" Mike asked, making Willa giggle and nod.
"You're the bestest grandpa ever," Willa promised, starting on her third croqueta.
"And how about me?" Clara inquired walking into the kitchen and winking at her granddaughter.
"You're the bestest grandma ever!" Willa stated, earning a warm squeeze from her grandma.
"And how about your mami?" Mike asked, catching Lauren off guard as she entered the room.
"What about me?" Lauren asked.
"You're the bestest mama in the whole world!" Willa exclaimed, getting off her chair and running over to hug her mama.
"Aww my baby, thank you. You are the best daughter anyone could ask for," Lauren said, peppering Willa's face with kisses. "I love you."
"Love you more," Willa said, allowing for another squeeze before she returned to her lunch.
"What're you eating?"
"Co-qet!" Willa said happily, putting an entire croqueta into her mouth.
"Croqueta, mi nina," Clara said, laughing at the mis-pronounciation. "Lauren, what will your abuela say when she finds out you aren't teaching your daughter Spanish?"
"Abuela will know nothing," Lauren said, giving her mother a look. Clara laughed and raised her hands in surrender, heading back outside. "Alright, give me a bite, pretty girl. I've got to get back to work."

When people began to arrive Lauren got lost in the swarm of family reuniting with her after so long. She was taken from one person to the next, Willa always hiding by her side.
Willa didn't want to admit it, but she was overwhelmed. Like, more than she was with the fans at the airport. At least there her mama was holding her, but here she was constantly chasing after her, trying not to get left behind.
"Lauren, your aunt is here."
And there she went again, moving with Clara in another direction. Willa tried to hurry after them, but LoBear slipped from her hands and landed on the grass. When she picked the bear up she looked back up to find her mama was nowhere to be seen. This couldn't be happening. She didn't know the people here. She didn't like this one bit.
