"Water now?" Willa asked, pointing to the water as she bounced on her toes.
"Let me just get your cheeks," Lauren said, squirting more sunscreen onto her finger before wiping it over Willa's face, causing her to twist her face into one of disgust. "There, now the sun won't turn you into elmo."
"Hey, princess. Want to go with me and Ally to the water?" Normani offered, hoping to give Lauren a chance to skimboard with Dinah while the water was at a decent tide.
Willa looked to her mother, waiting for some sort of approval or encouragement.
"Go ahead. I'll be there," the brunette promised, giving her daughter a wink before looking to the beach blanket so she could finish putting away the things they didn't need.
Tentatively, Willa reached out and took Normani's hand, giving it a tug before raising her arms, showing she wanted to be carried in the water.
"Let's go, WillaBee," the woman laughed, gently pulling the child up and onto her hip, calling Ally to join them as she approached the calm waves.
"I love this place," Ally sighed as the older women began to step through the water, allowing the chill to send goosebumps over their skin.
"Are there fish in here?" Willa asked, her toes touching the water as Normani went in deeper.
"Sure are. But they don't like humans so they won't be around us," Normani explained, laughing when Willa suddenly squealed as the water swallowed her feet.
"Cold!" The little one said, giggling as she all but climbed Normani's upper body to keep herself dry.
"It get's better once you're in it entirely," Ally said, showing how she crouched down all the way to her neck before standing upright again. "See, now I'm not so cold anymore."
Willa raised her eyebrows in skepticism but began to slide down Normani's side, allowing her whole body to go into the water, keeping her head up with her doggy paddle as Normani kept her hands at her hips at all times.
"Is it good?" the darker woman asked, trying to decide whether or not she should pick Willa up again.
"Like the pool at home," Willa said, laughing as the waves pushed her around a bit. It was soothing.
"Yeah. Just don't open your eyes underwater. They may burn," Ally explained, laying back slightly so she could rest on the surface of the water.
Willa nodded in agreement and continued her doggy paddling.
After five minutes her legs began to ache. She instantly grabbed Normani's arms and basically hugged her, a silent request to be held for a while.
Normani smiled and readjusted the girl to rest in her arms, going in a bit deeper so they could bob around in the ocean.
"What's Lolo doing?" Willa asked, pointing to the place where the waves broke, both Lauren and Dinah throwing boards down and jumping on them before either jumping off or falling due to a failed trick.
"They're skim boarding. You know what surfing is?"
Willa nodded her head against Normani's chest, continuing to watch Lauren and Dinah laugh as they played.
"Well, it's sort of like that, expect people have to do it in only a little bit of water and their board doesn't float."
"Is it scary?" Willa inquired.
"Probably when you're learning, but once you get the hang of it I'm sure it isn't," Normani carefully rubbed Willa's back under the water, her heart swelling as this was the first time the child let her get this close for such a long period of time.
