Serena
After my eyelids fluttered open, panic began to fill my body due to the unfamiliarity of the bed I was laying in. But then I noticed my daughter snuggled up next to me, and I realized that I was in Leah's house. Slowly, I crawled out of bed as to not disturb Sapphire, and made my way downstairs.
As I approached the kitchen I could hear Leah and Chres speaking in hushed voices. When I got a bit closer, I was able to make out what they were saying and began to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"She just needs to stay here for a few days," I heard Leah say.
"You know I don't have a problem with that, but why? Does she need help with her rent or something?" Chres asked, keeping his voice low.
"I don't think so. My guess is that it has something to do with that douchebag she's dating."
Bingo.
"What did Daniel do? Did they have a fight or something?"
"Probably, but I don't know for sure." Leah said , letting out a sigh. Not wanting to hear anymore of their conversation, I took a deep breath and walked into the kitchen.
"Hey Serena, how you feeling?" Leah asked with a look of concern on her face. I smiled half heartedly at her and took a seat at the table.
"How'd you and Sapphire sleep?" Chres asked, looking at me with that same damn look.
I hated that look.
"Just fine. Thanks for letting us stay here by the way. It means alot." Leah smiled at me, then shot Chres a look from across the table. I didn't know what that look meant, but by the way Chres was scrambling to get up from his seat, I'm guessing he did. "Well I'll talk to you ladies later."
After Chres left the kitchen I looked at my best friend suspiciously. "What's all this about?"
"It's about you Serena. Whats going on between you and Daniel?" She asked , her eyes locked on me. I avoided her stare and tried acting dumb. "What are you talking about?"
Leah narrowed her eyes. She could smell bullshit from a mile away. "You know exactly what I'm talking about Serena Stokes. Don't play games with me."
At that moment Sapphire walked in the kitchen rubbing her eyes. "Good morning Mommy. Good morning Aunty Lee." She yawned. Leah gave me a look that said, "You're lucky she walked in." I turned my attention to Sapphire and kissed her forehead.
"Good morning baby," I said, lifting her up onto my lap.
"Why are we at Aunty Lee's house? When did we get here?" Sapphire asked looking around the kitchen.
"Well, I really wanted to have a sleepover with you guys so I invited you over." Leah answered, smiling at Sapphire.
"Where's daddy?" Leah and I exchanged a look, and then she thought of an excuse for why Daniel wasn't here. "Well, it was a girls only sleepover."
Sapphire seemed satisfied with that answer and turned her attention to me.
"Mommy can I have some ice cream?" She asked sweetly, giving me the puppy dog face. I furrowed my eyebrows at her. "No, you haven't even had breakfast yet. and when do I ever let you have ice cream for breakfast?"
Sapphire began to pout, and Leah made her way over to the freezer. "Oh, just let her have the ice cream Serena." she said, taking the ice cream carton out the freezer. I shot her a death glare, and she shrugged and put it back.
"How about I pick up Amira and take you guys out for ice cream later?" Leah suggested to Sapphire, making her face light up.
"But first lets go get you cleaned up, okay?" I said, holding her hand. Before I could lead her upstairs, my cell phone began to ring. I picked up the phone and saw that it was Daniel calling.
