Chapter 3:~ Protective

Shivers passed through my body as the boat sped back to the mainland. Evan sat next to me, the silence between us was just too thick because we both knew what would happen to me when I got home. I felt something shift next to me and when I looked Evan was holding out his jacket for me. I smiled and took it from him. I slipped my hands into the large sleeves and zipped up the front. I relished in the warmth and the familiar smell that is Evan.

I didn't want to go back, it ended too soon and I don't want the pain to start back. I felt something wrap around my hand and I relaxed instantly. Looking down, I saw Evan's fingers entertwined with mine. I layed my head down on his shoulder, the need to not leave his side stronger than ever.

My eyes landed on Nathan who was sitting on the bow of the boat. He was staring at mine and Evan's hands and if we were back on the island, I would've felt kind of guilty. But right now I could care less because I needed Evan since he was calming me down a little bit.

"I'll come and visit you every chance I get, alright. Don't worry too much for now," he whispered in my ear and I nodded slowly trying my best to relax as I listened to sound of his breathing.

"Can I worry about the fact that my Business notebook is missing?" I asked light heartedly and he chuckled.

"Well there is a slight possibility that I might have it."

"Why?" I questioned as I looked up at him.

"So I'd have a good excuse to show up at your door," he said just soft enough for my ears only. I felt my cheeks get warm and I was sure it was tinged with lite shade of red.

Too soon, the engine became quieter as the boat slowed to a stop next to the dock. I watched from Evan's side as my dad and Nathan tied the ropes so that the boat wouldn't drift off. It was then that we started to offload our bags and Evan helped me out of the boat.

I fixed the strap of my duffel bag on my shoulder and walked as close to Evan as possible. I didn't want my dad to think that something was going on with Evan and I.

"You don't look too happy to be back," Nathan said from behind me and I glanced back to see that was just a few centimeters away.

"I just love the beach house a lot," I mumbled and Evan's hand brushed mine as we continued to walk on the gravel covered ground. We finally stopped by one of those 4x4 mazda van/truck things. I'll just call it a van. Everyone threw their bags into the tray of the van. I stood still as I watched Uncle Matthew get into the  driver's side while my dad went to the passenger's side. Aunt Laura and Nathan got into the back and I hesitated.

"Angel," my head instantly turned to face Evan who was standing in the tray, his hand outstretched to me. I took his hand and he helped me up into the tray. "You looked a little bit confused," he said as we both sat. His back was pressed against the side as I layed down on his lap.

"That's a nice way to put it," I said and he shrugged. We didn't talk during the short drive, he just played in my hair. When the van jerked to a stop in front of my house, my muscles tensed but soon relaxed when I realized that the driveway was empty of the two cars. I quickly jumped out of the tray and onto the pavement. Evan handed me my duffel bag before kneeling down in the tray so that I could give him a hug.

"I'll call as soon as I get home," he whispered in my ear and I nodded. I pulled back and walked to the front of the van to tell everyone else goodbye. I walked up to the porch and unlocked the front door. I locked the door behind me before going up to my room. I dropped my bag on the bed before realizing that I still had his jacket. Oh well, he'll just have to do without it. My phone rang then and the first thing I hear was my friend's voice.
