Chapter 1:~ Exposed

I sat on the floor of the balcony and leaned against the cool metal of the railing as I stared out at the ocean that reflected its surroundings like a perfect mirror. I loved this spot at the beach house because no one could see me from down below in the water but I could see them, and right now everyone was in the water. I was happy, as happy as I could be at the moment, and it was all because I was away from everything for two weeks. But my mind couldn't help but travel to all the thoughts that I had labelled Dangerous.

I heard a creak of the floorboards behind me and sighed. So much for some alone time. "How long were you standing there?" I called out to the person behind me.

"Five minutes I think," he said and I instantly recognized who it was. Evan. "What exactly are you doing, Ava? Your dad's looking for you," he continued to speak as he took a seat on the floor next to me.

"Well I was going to take a picture so I could change my profile picture on Whatsapp because my friend said that I don't change it often enough. But I ended up contemplating a bunch of things," I replied easily since it was basically the truth.

"What kind of things, exactly?" he questioned and for a moment, I wondered if I could truly trust him. He probably didn't really care. But I couldn't keep everything to myself anymore. If I did I might just explode like a ticking time bomb.

"I was wondering if... If it was really worth it to stay alive," I said.

"What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice a little shaky.

"I just... I dunno. My life isn't all that great. I have all these medical problems showing up one right after the other. And I'm failing in almost everything at school. And my parents, well my mother actually, seems like she doesn't even care," I tried to explain but I kept the real reason to myself.

"You know that you wouldn't have had this life if you couldn't handle it," he said softly.

"Yeah, I know but I can't do this alone anymore," I said. I never looked over at him once, in fear that my eyes would give away my thoughts. In fear that he could see that there was more than I was letting on. "What are you really doing here Evan? Because if my dad was really looking for me he would've came for me, himself."

"I don't know what you're talking about," he mumbled as he looked away and I laughed.

"Oh really now?"

"Okay, Okay. You were missing from the group downstairs and I wanted to know if you were okay."

"Well now you know, so... you gonna leave now," I said.

"Nope. So... you said something about a picture," he said and I nodded.

"You wanna take a picture of me?" I asked.

"No, I wanna be in the picture."

"Are you serious?" I laughed and he just nodded. So we stood up and I pulled out my phone. "You are going to put on a shirt, right?" I asked as I glanced at his toned bare chest. He has this habit of walking around shirtless all day, every day, whenever we're at this house.

"I will if you will," he said and I looked down at myself to see what I was wearing. Jeans shorts and my bikini top. I was too lazy to walk inside just to put on a top, so I just glared at him.

"Well played," I mumbled and he smirked.

"I know, now take the picture."

I opened the app and flipped the camera so that it was facing us. Evan stepped closer to me and layed his arm across my shoulder. We smiled into the camera and I pressed my thumb to the screen where the mini camera picture was. There was a tiny sound of a click and the picture was taken. Evan took a step back from me and I looked at my phone to see the picture properly. It looked perfect. If anyone who didn't know the both of us saw this, they would probably think we were a couple. But that would never happen.
