Chapter 5:~ Bitter
"Evan James Knight, I have been worried sick! Don't you think you should call you're mother when you know that you're going to be out after dark!" Aunt Laura shouted at Evan and I fought the urge to chuckle when he opened his mouth to speak but she just continued to talk. I don't even think she noticed me. We were all standing in the middle of the pathway in front of Evan's house.
"You're supposed to call! Or text at least! You could have been kidnapped or in the hospital or... or...!"
"Aunt Laura, he was with me," I said, cutting her off from her rant. Her eyes met mine for the first time since we arrived. Her eyes widened a bit before she pulled me into a death grip, aka her world famous hugs.
"Mum, she needs air to live," Evan spoke and aunt Laura pulled back.
"Sorry dear," she smiled before turning back to her son. Without warning she slapped him upside the head. I chuckled. "Call next time," she said before going inside.
"I always forget how crazy she can get sometimes," I said to Evan with a smile.
"So can I," he replied as he rubbed his head.
"You know I just realized something," I said as we walked up to his front door.
"What's that?"
"You're like, literally my Knight in shining armor," I told him and he grinned. Great, I just gave him an unneeded ego boost, didn't I?
"Well then that makes you my princess," he grinned and I bit my lip.
"I guess..." I trailed off as he opened the door.
"After you."
We walked inside, through the living room, where I left my bag, and to the dining room where Evan's mum was setting the table for a late dinner. Evan pulled out a chair for me, the stupid grin not leaving his face so I poked out my tongue before sitting down at the circular table. Evan sat beside me as Aunt Laura and Uncle Mathew brought out the food. I frowned.
"Where's Nathan?" I asked as Aunt Laura handed me a bowl of mash potatoes. I scooped some onto my plate before passing it on.
"At Devon's," she replied as she handed me a bowl with broccoli. I emptied some of the mini-trees next to my potatoes before handing it to Evan. "He'll be back later tonight," she continued.
"So he can stay out but I get yelled at," Evan joked.
"He called first," his mum countered. I was handed a dish with chicken and I quickly took out a leg before pouring some gravy onto the potatoes.
The meal continued peacefully with Evan's parents making small talk with me ever so often. They asked about school and how I spent the remainder of my break after we came back from the beach house on the island. Once everyone was finished, I helped Aunt Laura clean up the table even though she told me not to.
"You leave the dishes to me and go on upstairs," Evan's mother told me.
"But Aunt--"
"No. Now go or I'll put you outside," she told me and I thought it was strange for her to threaten to put me out, so I made my way out the kitchen and to the living room.
"So my mum threatened you?" Evan said as he stood up from the couch, puching his phone into his back pocket.
"Yeah, it was a first for me," I replied as I followed him up the steps and he chuckled. We walked down the hallway and he opened a door to his left. I followed him as he walked in but stopped by the door frame.
