Chapter 16
"Progress"The rest of the week passed by smoothly. My orders of decorations for Cody's party had came earlier than expected. It was Friday today and they were to arrive tomorrow afternoon. Due to the minor "inconvenience" I had to drive out to Ruby's mom's home in order to meet with them.
"Thank you for driving out to meet with us! I'm so sorry I couldn't go to your office due to the car being in the shop but make yourself at home." I smiled and nodded as I took a seat across from her at the dining table. I began to present to her some of the centerpieces and decorations. "I absolutely love them but we still need Cody's opinion. Would you want something to eat while we wait? I made some lasagna last night." I nodded grinning, "I would love that- lasagna is my absolute favorite."
After we finished our food and began discussing over other preparations the front door opened and laughing was heard from the living room.
"Mum, we're home!" I looked up and met eyes with Ruby. She was dressed in casual attire, sweatpants and a tank top. Cody looked sun burnt. "Cody! Why are you so red?!" The young boy laughed nervously, "Ruby took me out to the pier and well... I sort of forgot to put on sun lotion." His mother rolled her eyes but waved him over. "Ms. Erin brought your decorations today, what do you think?" He examined the decorations and smiled, "they're cool! Thanks a lot, Erin." I smiled at him, "no problem, Cody. Any other ideas? Did you look for some online like I suggested?" His face lit up, "oh yeah! Hold up, I got them on my iPad."
Cody's ideas were pretty easy, allowing me to order what was needed. I had a tour of the backyard which was where the party would take place and soon excused myself to go home. "See you tonight?" I looked up and nodded at her. "Of course, I can't wait." She smiled and waved at me as I walked out. I couldn't help but giggle as Cody teased his older sister causing her to smack him upside the head.
"Is this too much?" I asked as I examined my outfit. "You look smoking hot, doll." I giggled and playfully winked at her, "don't let Carter hear you." "Hear what?" I laughed and asked for her opinion. "You look gorgeous!" I thanked them and examined myself once more. "Who are you trying to impress or get back?" I rolled my eyes playfully, "no one, just going to support a friend?" She laughed at my unsureness, "oh ok, have fun but not too much fun!" Melissa bursted out laughing leaving me in embarrassment.
I had gotten to the club half an hour ago and was already enjoying myself. The music took over me as I swayed to it, sharing glances with the beautiful DJ. Ruby even winked at me which lead to some of her groupies to send death glares in my direction.
"You were amazing out there!" She grinned and engulfed me into a hug. Surprised, I let out a chuckle. "Thanks! I just got invited to play at this festival next weekend!" I clapped excitedly, "that's incredible! Congratulations!" She smiled and leaned in closer to me, "let's get out of here and celebrate?" I nodded and followed her out, letting her hand guide me as she intertwined our fingers.
"I just can't believe it! I mean I've always just played at the same club because I loved the feeling and crowd there but I never knew I'd be looked at by big music people, it's just insane!" I giggled as she rambled on. "You definitely deserve it though, although I've only seen you twice, you always kill it and people love you!" She chuckled and took a bite out of her salad wrap. "Thanks, Erin, I really appreciate it. Phoebe, although we were together and were meant to support one another, never complimented, let alone enjoyed my shows." I felt my cheeks heat up. She's never shared such personal information with me. I smiled at her and continued on with my food. Progress.
"Thank you, hope you come again." We both nodded and waved as we walked out of the little restaurant. "Man, I'm so tired!" I looked over at her, "I'm driving, remember? You did have plenty of drinks in there, anyway." She nodded sloppily and handed me her keys. "Thank you s-so much, babe."
I helped her out of the car and into her home. Turns out as time goes by you can get drunker. She nestled her head into my shoulder, swinging an arm around it for support. "You're too nice to me, babe." I smiled down at her, "that's what friends are for." She shook her head, "you're more than a friend." I awkwardly looked away, not sure if she meant it or not. Especially in her drunken state. I carefully opened the door making sure not to drop her. She laughed as she tripped on her foot, almost sending us both down.
"Is that it? Do you need anything else? A water bottle?" She shook her head and patted the empty space beside her. "Stay and lay with me." "Oh, I couldn't." She shook her head and pouted. "Please, babe? For me?" Something in my head told me to be smart and say no, that she was only drunk but my heart told me yes. Cheesy, I know, but I followed my heart and soon I was climbing into bed and next to her. "I just realized something", I mumbled. "Mmmm?" She whispered, her eyes shut. "I'm still in my dress." She giggled, "help yourself, babe. I have sweats in my closet or an oversized shirt will do."
Her breathing was soothing as I laid wide awake. I still couldn't believe I had agreed on laying in bed with her. She was only drunk and didn't understand what she was asking for. That had to be it, right? Agreeing with myself, I finally decided on sleeping. "Goodnight, Ruby." She mumbled something and wrapped her arms around me. I was stiff at first but then relaxed, welcoming her embrace and touch. She was warm and had soft skin. I smiled to myself once more. Progress.
