The morning was uneventful. Breakfast was made and eaten. Nancy and I took another quick swim out in the lake as Kelsey made lunch before she had to get Nancy ready for a play date with the neighbor's daughters.Lucas was going to be out all day at work and running some errands and so he would take Nancy to her babysitter for the night while Kelsey and I were at the party.
During breakfast, I told Kelsey that I would accompany her to the party tonight. I had realized that if I wanted to get my mind off of this mess with Ruby that I would need to loosen up and not let it get to my head.
Due to the location the party was being held at, Kelsey had made sure that we were both ready early and ready to leave by noon as the sun was setting. "Are you excited?" I thought about it for a second. "Sort of... actually, yeah, I am. Maybe I could find my soulmate tonight", I joked. Kelsey laughed and patted my arm as she drove. "Just don't drink too much, wouldn't want my wedding incident to happen again." I gasped in horror, covering my eyes in embarrassment. "You still remember that?!" Kelsey laughed even harder at my reddened face. "How could I forget? You got completely wasted after your many trips to the mini bar we had, flirted with nearly every single woman who attended then proceeded to confess your 'love' to my sister-in-law. Thank you for that fond memory, Erin." I groaned and shook my head, "If there's a bar, I'm going to drink."
When we finally arrived at the "party" we realized it was actually some sort of concert that was going on. "My yoga buddy said it would be a get-together type of party but nearly half the town is here..." I suddenly remembered something that made my heart drop. "Crap." Kelsey turned to me, "what's wrong?" I shook my head, "nothing, I just remembered that I forgot to disconnect the laptop from its charger." She waved it off, "it's fine, I can text Lucas to disconnect it once he gets home. Alright, we're already here, might as well enjoy the music and free food!" I giggled and followed her to a table that had almost every snack you could ever think of. "Hello ladies, welcome to the 'Feel Good Music Festival', can I offer you two a drink? Alcoholic or non-alcoholic?" Kelsey asked for some sparkling water with a lemon wedge and I asked for some water.
After an hour of meeting new people and actually going to the stage to listen to the live music, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. I hadn't drunk any alcohol but I felt almost sick. As mentioned, I had remembered something as soon as Kelsey and I realized this wasn't a party but instead a concert/music festival. The entire hour I had just spent "mingling" was really just an effort to not run into her. After meeting this group of young girls that had traveled from Germany I learned that she was up to perform in a couple of minutes. I wanted to leave but Kelsey was enjoying herself and I didn't want to ruin it for her.
What could I possibly do now? What if I ran into her? Or even just got a glimpse of her? I began to worry inside the bathroom stall I was currently hiding in. A knock was what interrupted my fidgeting. "Uh, I'll be out in a minute!" I fixed my jacket, hair and wiped the sweat from my forehead. Being satisfied with my appearance, I stepped out of the stall in order to let whoever knocked in but as I did so, I grew confused when I found no one waiting. Shrugging, I washed my hands and stepped back outside and into the festival. Coincidentally the next performer was introduced and so the crowd grew with joy and excitement, nearly breaking the barrier between themselves and stage. My eyes could only scan the stage frantically, hoping I heard wrong but as soon as our eyes met my heart dropped and the heat from my body was replaced with a sudden coldness and despair.
