Size Matters

Nebraska's POV

___________

I frown as the lady avoids eye contact with me while putting in my order for ten large taco meals. Is it because we're ordering that much or is it because we're ordering that much at ten pm? I hear snickering from behind me and I turn around and see Braydon laughing at something on Levi's phone while Brandon is ignoring the two and texting on his own.

Shaking my head at them, I turn around and notice the lady giving the three wary glances before quickly looking at me and then down. It takes me a few seconds to realize why she's looking at us weirdly and once I understand I sigh.

When she tells me the price, I quickly pay with Layton's card and try to make small talk. I can make friends. "Must be busy this time of night, right?" I awkwardly start, playing with my hands.

She cocks an eyebrow at me and just shakes her head before handing me the receipt. No? Well at least I tried right? I make my way back to the ground as she turns to make the tacos and push Brandon since he was the closest, not that it does anything since the man is built like a brick wall.

"What?" he asks, looking up from his phone.

"You guys are such jerks," I huff, crossing my arms before taking a seat in one of the stools.

They stare at me blankly. "We offered to pay earlier," Braydon says, shrugging his shoulders.

"Don't say 'we' since only Levi and I offered to pay," Brandon says, narrowing his eyes at Braydon who just smiles innocently back at him.

"It's not that!" I groan. "It's because of your guys'...size." Their eyes widen and I feel myself start to blush once I realize what I implied. "I didn't mean-"

Suddenly all three burst out laughing while I sit to the side looking as red as a tomato. From me peripheral, I can see the lady cast us more weird looks while putting my order together while I try and will the fates to make me as invisible as we are in the mirror.

What a sight this must be. Three large, grown men dressed in mostly black just bent over in the middle of a fast food taco place laughing their butts off. It takes a solid minute and a half before they start to sober up, with chuckles still escaping every now and then.

"Our size offends you?" Levi says, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye as his laughter starts to die down, thankfully.

"Have you told your boyfriend that?" Braydon adds, nudging Levi and they both end up in another fit of laughter.

I helplessly look to Brandon hoping that he would be the voice of reason but he just ends up chuckling along with the two. Great, now I'm alone. I pout and wait for them to quiet down enough that they'll be able to hear me before attempting to explain myself better.

"What I was trying to say -oh my gosh stop laughing!- is that you guys look like my bodyguards or something," I tell them.

They look at each other and down on themselves before looking back at me. "What do you mean?" Brandon asks, looking confused as the other two.

"You guys are tall as frick and you guys are dressed like you're hiding a weapon or something bad. No wonder everyone was giving us weird looks while we were walking here from the car," I say.

All this time, I thought there was something wrong with me. Maybe I was a little too dressed up for getting fast food this late? But no, this entire time everyone was staring because I had three giant yetis shadowing my steps my entire way there.

"Layton's taller than us!" Braydon exclaims.

"I know but...that's not the point," I finish lamely, not really knowing where to go with this argument.

The lady calls me back but before I could move, I feel a hand on my shoulder so I look up to see Braydon's smirk. "Let me handle this," he says, winking at me before casually strolling towards the front. I groan and look away while watching Levi and Brandon watch with amusement on whatever Braydon is planning to do.

I feel someone behind me so I turn around to see Braydon holding a large plastic bag with a huge grin on his face. "I got the goods," he says, nodding. He then passes it on to Levi who immediately hands it over to Brandon. I raise a brow when Brandon looks at me but he just shakes his head before we start making our way to the car.

"I don't know why we got this much. No one in the castle is even human anyways," Levi says, pulling Brandon out of the driver's seat so he could get in. Brandon smacks Levi once before shoving Braydon away when he tries to get in the passenger seat. I swear I can't take these guys anywhere with me.

Braydon and Brandon argue for a while on who should sit up front while I casually take my phone out of my pocket and start to text Jason. He recently just got a job offer to work at a big company and we're celebrating for that. Unfortunately, that big company is in California which means that Jason has to move back to America, although this time on the West Coast rather than the South where he was born.

I don't want to see my little brother go. He's the only family I have left! Blood related I mean, I consider Layton my family too. I'm absolutely against him going but I know that I have to let him go. Jason worked too hard in his studies for a position this good and I don't want to stand in the way. I just hate that I'm not going to be able to make sure that he's safe 100% of the time.

"What's got you looking so glum?" Braydon asks, making me snap out of my thoughts. I turn to the side to see that it's him who's sitting next to me, meaning that Brandon must have won the fight earlier.

"I don't want to see Jason go," I tell him, leaning my head against the window.

"Let the boy spread his wings. He's like twenty now right? He can handle himself. Besides, separation anxiety is gonna kick in and he'll call you every hour," Levi says, tapping one hand against the window. I don't like that Levi usually drives one-handed, especially when we're on the highway, but it's like a habit since his other hand is usually out the window or something.

"Shut the fuck up Levi and drive properly," Brandon says, digging through the plastic bag. I swear he better not think about getting an early meal or something.

Braydon shakes his head and nudges me. "He'll be fine, Braska. He's been a vampire for more than six years now, he has his instincts and skills down pat. Drew wouldn't have let him leave if he didn't trust him to be alone," he tells me.

That's true I guess, but that doesn't mean much. I know that I won't feel comfortable unless I know that there's someone watching over Jason in case he gets in trouble. I don't want him to forget about me. That's my biggest fear, Jason will be so caught up with living by himself that he'll forget about the girl who raised him for over twenty years.

"He's not going to forget you, you know," Braydon quietly says.

I give him a small smile that I know looks forced before looking back at the window. I really hope he doesn't forget about me.
