okay so this was a v strange chapter to write because it had to fit with mastery, but when i wrote it from dan's point of view in mastery i didn't have any idea that i'd be writing an accompaniment book, so pj has all these insane mood swings because i didn't bother to plan him out properly ?? so i've tried v hard to give explanations for whatever the hell he's doing throughout this but i'm not sure how well i've done haha ok i'll stop talking now

"PJ!"

PJ spun around, hearing his name, and grinned as he saw Dan marching across the badminton courts, brandishing two rackets like swords and scowling exaggeratedly. "What?" he asked, already knowing what he was going to say.

"You little shit." Dan dropped his arms to his sides, screwing up his face in an expression of what he clearly hoped was anger, but had too much of a smile behind it.

"Come on, you know you love me really," PJ laughed, grinning at Dan, who looked as though he'd run into a wall.

"You liar."

PJ would have been offended if Dan wasn't holding back giggles and looking so extremely annoyed that it was actually funny. "But admit it - it was an amazing lie."

Dan narrowed his eyes. "I mean, it was very impressive, but you're a shit all the same."

A bubble of laughter escaped PJ, and he grinned over at Dan. "It was great, wasn't it?" He pushed a hand into the pocket of his shorts, eyes flicking from Dan to the slightly blurry figure of Chris, sitting on a bench on the other side of the room.

Dan laughed too, and held a racket out to PJ, who took a few seconds to realise it was even there - he was so preoccupied by Chris' smile. "It was. How'd you get Miss Averell in on it?"

"I have charm," PJ replied with a wink, tossing the racket lightly, but keeping his eyes fixed on Chris. He barely registered Dan's next words, but he could see Dan's raised eyebrow and faux-incredulous expression, so he grinned and lightly punched Dan's arm, trying to change the topic. "Anyway, what was the result of my lie? I'm guessing it was good by the way you're smiling."

He tore his eyes away from Chris to look at Dan, who was beaming. "Hasn't Phil told you yet?" Dan asked shyly.

"Haven't seen him," PJ said with a shrug.

"Oh. Well," Dan said, his smile growing, "your lie worked wonders."

"Ooh, I'm intrigued," PJ said, laying his racket down onto the floor and sat down, back against a post. "Tell me?"

To his credit, PJ did try to listen. He kept his eyes carefully turned away from Chris' corner, and nodded at all the right places, but after a while he just had to turn his face to yawn, and his eyes just had to land on Chris as he played badminton, and before he knew it, Dan was explaining in a little too much detail how he and Phil had kissed, and he'd missed half the story.

"Well, I'm proud of you, Danny-boy," PJ said, wondering when he became the sort of person who ignored his friends to watch Chris Kendall from over the room.

"Don't call me that," Dan said, giggling, and PJ felt awful that the attention he should be giving his excitable friend was instead being directed towards a boy who he really needed to stop liking in the way that he did.

"I'm proud of you, Dan," PJ said, resting his chin lightly on his hand and looking very carefully away from Chris, for about the tenth time that day.

"What for?"

PJ took a moment to debate whether he wanted to say this or not, before going for it. "Embracing the homo."
