Chris was standing at the gate a few minutes after the bell rang, and PJ approached him slightly nervously. "Hey," he said, pushing his hands into his pockets, heart pounding in his chest.
"Hey!" Chris beamed at him, and, feeling slightly more at ease, PJ smiled back. They began to walk out of the school, PJ keeping a careful distance from Chris - not too far as to show he was nervous, but not too close either. "So, about that in badminton..."
PJ went red immediately. "Before you say anything, let me explain. Dan asked me who I liked, I said you, he thought we didn't know each other, I went along with that, and it all got a bit messed up."
Chris had started smiling again. "You said you liked me, huh?"
"That's besides the point." PJ could feel the blush creeping over to his ears. "I mean, it's partly the point, but the point it I basically asked you out as though we don't know each other but we do know each other and that might affect whether you want to say yes or not and I sorta pressured you into it because Dan was there as well and it's all a little bit strange-"
He paused to take a breath and Chris gently elbowed him. "If you're worried that I didn't want to say yes, don't be. I do want to date you, honestly. I've wanted to since, like, years ago."
PJ lost the power of speech for a moment. "Seriously?"
"Obviously. I mean, who wouldn't?" Chris grinned at the expression on PJ's face. "But in all seriousness, I thought we should probably have a proper talk about it because you know what my parents are like and back there wasn't the best time for serious talks."
"Oh, shit, I forgot about that." PJ's heart sunk. "Will everything be okay with them?"
"I'm hoping so." Chris looked up ahead at the crossing where they usually parted ways. "Can I come over to yours?"
"Sure! I don't think James is in." PJ tried to ignore the many different meanings of that sentence as they crossed the road, heading up a narrow alleyway to his house.
They kicked their shoes off downstairs and PJ headed into the kitchen to get a glass of water. "Living room, kitchen or bedroom?" he asked.
"I'm gonna say bedroom," Chris answered, winking, and PJ threw a sponge at him.
"Mr Kendall, that is not appropriate behaviour for our first day as a couple."
They headed upstairs, and PJ fell backwards onto his bed with a sigh. "So," he said when Chris was seated beside him. "Your parents?"
Chris sighed, leaning backwards and staring at the ceiling. "Basically, one of the reasons I haven't dated anyone is because I know I'll be the world's most terrible boyfriend and I don't want to put anyone through that, so I don't want you getting into a relationship with me and not knowing what hard work I'm going to be."
"Hard work?" PJ propped himself up on one elbow. "What do you mean?"
"Like, you'll never be able to come over to mine, you'll never meet my parents, we'll have to constantly be making up excuses for who you are and where I'm going, on those nights where I'm not at home you'll be the first person I phone and ask to stay with, and so on and so forth." He looked down at his hands. "It's not a good situation. It'll be a lot of hiding in the shadows and pretending I'm completely single and that I have no attraction to people. You might even have to deal with my parents pushing girls at me left, right and centre."
PJ reached out for Chris' hand, looking up at him with a small smile. "You know I don't care about any of that, don't you? I've known about your parents for years, I've had to deal with a load of shit from them already where I've had to pretend I've got a girlfriend and we have a completely heterosexual manly relationship with no hidden attraction whatsoever. It's just in this situation, I'll get the added bonus of being able to kiss you and all that relationship crap."
Chris smiled. "Seriously?"
"I'm not giving up on dating you just because your parents are wankers. Okay?"
In response, Chris leaned down and pressed his lips gently to PJ's, soft and warm and tasting slightly of peppermint. "Okay."
