The pen glides across the papers as I make notes in my notebook, one of the many notebooks I've been keeping lately. It's been a few weeks since I got the first book from Uncle Cas, him giving me more and more as I've read through them. He sneakily delivers them to me, either at the bunker or while I'm at school so that my parents don't find out. Though I know he feels guilty about going behind my parents backs, I think he thinks it's important that I know about the dangers of this world.

And with each new book I haven't been able to stop myself from binge reading it, wanting to learn more and more. Every spare moment I have to myself, I spend in these books. I'll admit, it's getting a little obsessive but I can't help myself. The more I read, the more I understand what my parents where like before they settled down. If I close my eyes, I can almost see them doing it. Fighting monsters and saving the world.

My phone buzzes on the desk and I look over, grabbing at it when I see there's a message. A small smile comes to my lips as I see it's from her, Are you kidding me, is that seriously how it ends?!

I chuckle to myself at the message and shake my head, opening it up to type a reply, What did you expect? It was a zombie apocalypse movie 😂

The message is read instantly and the three dots come up, soon followed by another buzz, I expected at least one survivor. But no, they all died! Why would you want me to watch this?!

It's a good movie! One of my favourites! I type back quickly, trying to defend myself.

The three dots come back quickly and soon her reply comes through, Yeah, well you're lucky I like you enough to have sat through the whole thing.

My heart skips a beat a little bit at her message... She likes me. These past couple of weeks have been good between Madeline and I. We've been hanging out a lot, getting to know each other better. That in turn has got Mom all over my case, wanting to know more about her. As much as I love my mother, it frustrates me that she smothers me try's to be involved in every part of my life.

I look back down at the message and type a quick response, Yeah... I like you too.

"Harlow! You ready to go?" My Dad's voice booms from downstairs.

I quickly shut my notebook and the lore book, quickly stuffing them into the drawer of my desk. I quickly get to my feet and grab everything I need before making my way down the stairs. I make my way into the kitchen where the rest of my family is, eating their breakfast.

"I said we'd be leaving in ten minutes, what took you so long?" Dad asks, looking up from his washing up.

"Sorry Dad." I quickly apologise, trying to cover up with as much of the truth as I can tell him, "I messaging Madeline."

"Of course you were." Mary mutters, her spoon scraping on the bottom of her bowl of cereal.

"Harlow and Madeline sitting in a tree!" Jo teases in a sing song voice.

I roll my eyes as I reach over and snatch up the last piece of toast on Sam's plate. He turns around and glares at me, trying to take the food back, "Give it back."

"I don't think so!" I grin triumphantly, holding the food out of his reach.

"Just you wait till I have a growth spurt and I'm taller than you and can beat you up." He sneers and I chuckle, "Never gonna happen little brother."
