"Your hands are so soft." I murmur into Madeleine's ear, my head resting on her shoulder. My fingers play with hers, her soft skin vastly different to my calloused one.

She chuckles as she leans back into me, her head resting against mine in the booth of the diner, "Yeah, well I guess mine aren't put to as good a use as yours are these days. I feel like I barely see you with all the time you spend at the shop."

I pause for a moment, pushing away the fear of being caught in the lie and shrug, "Dad's been needing a lot of help lately."

I'm not exactly lying, some of the guys at the shop have been off sick. So I have been working there, but not as often as I've been saying I have. I've told Madeline I've been working late nights and weekends and I've told Mom and Dad I've been with Madeline, but I've actually been working cases. Nothing too major, but enough for my hunting skills to be getting better. I've only done another two cases, another couple of ghosts.

"I miss seeing your face." She says, lifting her hand up to my cheek.

"I've missed you too." I say, really meaning it.

The side of her mouth turns up, a softness coming to her eyes. Unable to stop the smile from coming to my face, I close my eyes and lean down to press my lips against hers. Her fingers spread out, reaching into my hairline that causes goosebumps to form over my skin.

"All right, knock it off you two!"

The both of us pull apart and look over towards the deep voice, a smile spreading across my face as I spot Tony and Vanessa. Madeline and I both sit up and I hold a hand out towards Tony, "Hey man."

He clasps his hand with mine in a shake before taking his seat, Vanessa and Madeline exchanging a hello. The both of them take their sears and Vanessa let's out a happy sigh, "I'm so glad we chose this place, they have the best cheeseburgers in the world!"

"I agree with you there, the way the cheese melts onto the meat..." Madeline trails off.

Both girls groan in delight and Tony and I exchange a chuckle. He looks towards his girlfriend and shakes his head, "Of course we'd both choose girls who have the appetite of footballers."

Vanessa gives him the side eye, "Most girls have that appetite, we're just not afraid to show it."

"Yeah, I like my food and I'm gonna eat it." Madeline states and I chuckle, wrapping my arm around her, "And that's something I love about you."

She freezes at my choice of word and I do too, realising what I just said. My heart pounds in my chest with nerves, my free hand balling into a fist under the table. We haven't said the 'L' word to each other yet, this being the closest we've come to it.

In the corner of my eyes, I see Vanessa and Tony smirking at the two of us. They surpassed this stage years ago. I kick Tony in the leg under the table and he groans, reaching down to rub his shin. Vanessa steps in and saves the moment, looking between the three of us, "Shall we order?"

Madeline clears her throat and looks away from me, nodding her head, "Yeah, I think so."

Vanessa nods and looks towards the counter, trying to get the attention of one of the servers. My heart begins to slowly beat less erratically, the nerves receding from my body. I scold myself, I can take on ghosts but the thought of telling Madeline I love her scares the hell out of me? Pathetic.
