Making my way inside, I tuck the newspaper into the lining of my pants to keep out of sight of my parents. The door closes behind me and I look over to my parents and my siblings who all sit in front of the TV, either watching it or occupied with their phones or laptops.
"I think I'm gonna head to bed." I announce, drawing the attention of everyone.
"You're going to bed? It's only nine thirty." Sam says, looking at me funny.
"Yeah, I guess I'm tired." I state, trying to remain casual.
Mom sits up and looks at me with a raised eyebrow, "You feeling okay?"
I nod my head quickly, "Yeah, I'm fine Mom. I'm just tired is all."
She looks at me suspiciously and Dad rubs her arm, "The kids tired, he's fine. He just had a big day at the shop."
"Yeah, exactly." I say, thankful that my Dad doesn't suspect anything is up.
"All right... Well good night sweetheart." Mom says, relaxing slightly.
Relief comes over me and I nod, "Night everyone."
They all chorus together saying goodnight and I turn, making my way up the stairs to my room. Once inside, I close the door and walk over to my desk. I switch on the lamp and pull the paper out from my pants line, opening it up to page where the headline is. My eyes run over the article, taking in the information.
According to the article, seventeen year old Nora McAdams is the second teen to have died within the past week. She apparently drowned in her bathtub on Tuesday where her older brother found her. The first victim also drowned three days before hand in his backyard pool. His name was Wyatt Collins and he was eighteen years old.
A weird feeling comes over me as I look at his age, it being the same age as me. I shake it off and continue reading, trying to find any indications of what I could be dealing with. But as I look it over, I realise I'm too inexperienced to try and figure it out on my own.
Reaching into my desk draw, I grab out a pair of scissors and cut out the article. The photos of the two teens look up at me, giving me an eery feeling and I can't help but wonder if this is how Mom and Dad felt when they worked cases.
These deaths happened in a place two towns over, meaning that for me to investigate I'll have to leave town. I grit my teeth, wondering how on Earth I'm going to get away from the house that long without my parents wondering where I am. I think for a moment before an idea hits me. Reaching for my phone, I go to my contacts and call the familiar number.
"I must be going mad, this isn't my best friend calling me is it? Because I haven't heard from him since he got the woman of his dreams." Tony says, a playfulness in his tone.
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that man. I've just been crazy busy between school, the shop and Madeline." I say, feeling guilty for not spending time with him.
"It's cool man, I understand." Tony says, shrugging it off, "That's what I was like when Vanessa and I got together."
I chuckle as I think back, "Yeah, that was a long two months for me having to third wheel for you guys."
"Well now that you're with Madeline, you won't have to third wheel anymore." He states, "Maybe we can go on a double date sometime."
