Chapter 6
“Casey,” I jerked up. I looked around and realized I was still curled up on the couch with the television colored blue from the end of the movie I was watching.
I looked behind me to see my dad standing in the door frame. His arms were crossed and his eye brows were scrunched together, “Did you sleep down here?”
I cleared my throat and scratched the top of my head and nodded.
He sighs, “Well go get ready. School starts in thirty minutes. I’m going to bed.”
I watched as he walks up the stairs. I waited until I heard his door close before I got up and got myself ready for the day.
The parking lot was almost full when I turned in. I found a place in the back and started the hick toward the entrance. I still had about ten minutes before the warning bell rang.
I quickly walked to my locker to switch out some books for my first period, Calculus. I bent down to grab the book and notebook when I felt someone lean up against the lockers. I looked up to see Daniel smirking down at me.
“Yes?” I asked. I was surprised and relieved that he stopped to talk to me. The muscle in my stomach went to mush.
“What’s up?” he had his arms folded against his chest. And with the plain, white tee-shirt and dark jeans he looked breath taking and gorgeous.
I shook my head to get rid of the thoughts in my head. I couldn’t afford to think of him as someone I could potentially have a relationship with. It would never work. I was too plain and he was too extraordinary. I used to spend up weekends with alcohol and he probably spends them helping his dad on the farm. We don’t match.
I read this article once about how opposites really don’t attract. That’s only half true. I’m attracted to everything about the male in front of me. But I also know that if we were to get in a relationship those opposites would butt heads and ruin everything. I’m just looking out for myself and Daniel in the long run.
“What no reply? You know usually people fire back a ‘no much, you?’ kind of thing,” he laughs as he caught me deep in thought. It didn’t help that I was staring right at him the whole time.
I roll my eyes at him, “Sorry, I didn’t sleep much last night.”
Daniel’s face dropped, “I probably should have woke you up before I left.”
I shook my head, “It’s not your fault. I just,” what was I going to tell him? Yeah, Daniel, I saw a wolf on my back porch that reminded me of you. That would go over well. “I… Do very many wolves live around here?”
Daniel gave me a funny look then smiled, “Yes, but they don’t stick around humans. Did you see one?”
I looked up at him, “Yeah, one was on my back porch.”
“Oh,” Daniel looked away as if trying to figure out what to say but he couldn’t find the words.
“Oh?” That’s all he was going to say?
Daniel sighed, “What did it look like? What did you do?”
“It was big,” I told him and he watched as my eyes got huge. “And I’m talking about the biggest wolf I’ve ever seen.”
