~JUST AS I RUN INTO THE double doors that joins us to the balcony of the ballroom, my mother's voice booming over everything else allows me to sigh in relief.

We made it.

Already waiting by the door like the good boy he is, is none other than my brother. Once he takes note of my late arrival, he starts giving me a perching look of disapproval.

"What," I hiss out.

He rolls his eyes at me, causing me to be even more agitated than I already am.

"What," I almost bark out.

"You."

"Me?"

"Yes, you. You're late"

"Gee, really." Now I'm the one rolling my eyes.

No shit, Sherlock.

"Why can't you ever just do what our mother asks you for once?"

"What? I'm here aren't I? Plus, it isn't like she's going to know unless you go ahead and tattle to her, like the goody-goody you are," I mock him. Of course, like always, Don denies this.

"Am not. And no, I am not going to tell her." I am about to question until he continues.

"It would only just hurt me too if I did."

Saying this brings back a vivid memory, but I push it out of thought, now sighing.

"Let's just drop this," my rage now out of me.

"Agreed," he motions back and we continue to listen to my mother's over the top welcome speech.

"...Thank you all for gathering in my presence once again. I know after my husband's death, I have not shown my presence around many of you, but I now speak on behalf of the entire Empire. We, the purebloods, have got out of hand. It seems that now-a-days, we turn innocent humans into something they have only had nightmares about. If the way the things are going continue, the Vampire Empire, as we know it, will completely fall apart.

"As the head of not only the Hardsworth name, but the Empire itself, I declare that it is we, the pureblood's duty to put an end to the underclasses. That is the main reason why I have gathered you all her today.

"For all the aristocrats that I have gathered here today, I ask you for your full support as we do our best to restrain as many underclass as possible.

"Before I finish and let tonight's ball begin, I would like to take this time to introduce my son and my daughter."

I'm not even given the light of day before the doors in front of me open. We are forced to enter forward to the balcony. Below us, hundreds of vampires await us, what more to admire us. Blankly, I stare at these vampires before me. All of there vampires are instantly drawn to my brother and I, just like we were some sort of god. Each one of them you can tell are just waiting to suck up to us, ask for money, or proposition their child's hand in marriage. Everyday I begin to now wonder, why was it our family that was destined to lead our race? Any other pureblood family would have been just as qualified, so why ours? All the attention we receive, all the high maintenance we get, anyone would kill for that title of the royal family. Literally, there have been many wars and feuds between other families and our own for the title.

When I was a juvenile vampire, I'd always question why our own family members would fight over the royal name, but my father soon answered my question for me.

"Only one family member may hold the true powers of the Hardsworth," he'd always say, a smile on his face. My father obviously was the one out of his siblings to inherit the Hardsworth power and name. He was the eldest of three, and one of two sons. It's always the eldest son that receives the powers, and that is why Don is the one who will rule.
