I woke up exhausted the next morning. I had a very weird dream last night, I saw me as a little kid with a boy, one who looks a little bit like Cole. We were playing together, laughing. My mom was there, along with another lady seemingly around my mom's age. I broke from the little boy's gaze and looked around. It was in my old houses backyard. That's when I woke up. Everything felt so real, almost as if it was a memory. I've been trying to escape my past so I shook off the thought.
I checked my phone to see that I've had 3 missed calls from an unknown number. I decided to call them back.-Phone conversation-
Me: Hello?
Unknown: Hi, this is Good Samaritan Hospital, how can I help you?
Me: You called me three times yesterday. My name is Lily Reed, what is happening?
Unknown: Oh, we were trying to let you know that your parents got into a bad car accident and are in critical condition. We suggest you get here soon.
Me: I'm on my way!
I was filled with panic and fear. Tears were pouring out of my eyes. Kendall was outside waiting to take me to school with Cole already in the car. I ran outside to tell Kendall what happened.
"Oh my God! Lily what happened? Cole asked, jumping out of the car to get closer to me.
"Kendall take me to the hospital! Now!" I demanded through my tears. I explained everything after we got into the car. Kendall drove while Cole sat in the back with me. His arms were tightly wrapped around me, he kept saying that things were going to be okay. That's the only thing I could hope for, however I did not believe it. I got emancipated early due to a lot of family issues so I could live by myself. My family still gives me a lot of money to support myself, that doesn't mean I don't work for what I have. I have a part time job at the local animal shelter. So I spend most weekends and some days after school there. I was still crying, hard. Cole started to hug me loosely. We arrived. I jumped out the car.
"Lily! Wait!" Kendall called.
I turned to face her, tears were still pouring out.
"I'm so sorry, but I can't miss anymore school. I'll make it up to you. Come on Cole." Kendall said grabbing Cole's hand. He jerked back.
"No. I'm not leaving Lily." He told Ken*dall.
"Let's go Lily." He said turning to me.
Kendall looked heartbroken but left anyway. I ran inside the building with Cole by my side. The lady at the front desk informed me that my father had passed by the time I got there. My dad and I have a very bad history. Yet, I couldn't help but cry, after all he was still my dad. I rushed into my mom's room with Cole behind me. My mom saw me and looked at me with love. When she saw Cole she looked shocked. The lady at the front desk said they think she will pass soon and to prepare myself. I sat bedside my mom holding her hand. Cole sat in the corner of the room watching what was happening.
"Mom, its going to be okay." I reassured her. She gave me a slight, weak smile in return. I kept reassuring her, hoping it might help. She had cast on her left arm and right leg, she had bandages on her forehead, her right arm. She looked awful, yet I knew I had to be strong.
-Cole's Point Of View-
I sat in the corner of the hospital room, my eyes glued on Lily as she focused on her mom. She was still sobbing, through her tears she was still trying to be strong for her mom. She was beautiful, even in her worst state. I kept my eyes on Lily, admiring her. I could not help but feel bad for her, since we just met I don't know anything about her family or her past, but whatever the case is, she seems to love her family dearly. Lily's mom motioned for her to come close to her face, assuming to tell her something. Her mom could almost barely whisper. I could see Lily's mom say something very faintly. After her mom finished saying her sentence Lily looked at me with a shocked expression. I was about to ask her what happened when Lily's mom started flat-lining. Doctors rushed in to try and save her, they pushed Lily out of the way, Lily ran over to me. I hugged her tightly as she watched as the doctors tried to revive her dead mom. In the end, her injuries were too severe and there was nothing left that the doctors could do. I held Lily tightly as she sobbed into my chest, I couldn't even imagine going through what she is going through. I didn't even know how to help her so I just held her. Lily eventually went to sit with her mom before anyone took her mom away. After 10 minutes some people came to take Lily's mom to the morgue. By then, Lily had stopped sobbing, she was now silently letting tears fall from her perfect face. It hurt me to see her like this, especially knowing there was nothing I could do to help her. Once they took Lily's mom away she came over and hugged me tight. The doctors didn't let us stay in the room for a couple minutes because they needed to make room for other patients. I took Lily to a park that was within walking distance. The walk there was silent, she just walked staring ahead and never moving her eyes from her gaze. After ten minutes of walking we reached the park. There was a beautiful white, wooden gazebo I led her to. We were both standing under the the center of the gazebo, I put my hand gently under her chin, and softly lifted her face to meet mine.
"I'm all alone now, Cole. I know I live alone, but I don't have anyone to call, text, or talk to. I don't have any family left. I don't have anyone to stay over my house and stay up to talk to me about everything." She spoke softly, almost inaudible. I was so happy she confided in me. I was unsure if it was because of the circumstances or if it was because she trusted me. Yet, I didn't care.
"You will always have me, Lily. No matter what." I told her, she now looked directly into my eyes. I saw the sadness and emotion in her eyes and it made my heart break. I was so caught up with everything and before I even knew what I was doing my lips were on Lily's. I instantly felt a spark between, it was something I had never felt before. We shared a long, passionate kiss, when we pulled apart we both gave a small smile, after that Lily was pulled back into her sadness. I pulled her into long hug before walking her home. The walk home was pretty much silent, however we did walk hand-in-hand. It felt right for us to be like this. When we arrived at Lily's house I kissed her on the cheek and watched her get into her house safely. I walked a house over to reach mine, I walked inside to hear my mom cooking.
"Cole? Is that you?" My mom asked, a hint of anger present in her voice.
"Yes, Mom. I have a good reason for missing school today. I didn't just ditch." I told her as I walk into the kitchen.
"And what may that be?" My mom asked glaring at me.
"The girl next door, Lily, her parents were in a car accident and they passed so someone needed to be there for her and her best friend, Kendall, could't so I stepped in." I explained to my mom. Her expression immediately turned from anger to fear.
"Did you say Lily?" My mom asked with worry present in her voice.
"Yeah, why?" I asked, worry was building up inside of me.
"What's her last name, Cole?" My mom asked, fear and worry were building up.
"Her name is Lily Reed. Why?" It looked like my mom's heart stopped.
"Oh no!" My mom started to cry.
"Mom what's wrong? What's happening?" I asked, the worry that was building up inside of me had now overcome me.
"Remember your long-lost childhood best friend who you lost contact with since we moved?" My mom asked, tears were coming out quicker by the second.
"Yeah, but why does that matter?" I asked confused on how that was relevant.
"It matters because Lily is your long-lost best friend, Cole. Lily's mom was also my best friend. " My mom said now crying harder, I could not believe what I just heard. I always thought that something was very familiar about Lily. But I could almost not believe that was the reason why.
