Chapter Eight - The Lie

It was official now. The beaver and the ferret. The Gryffindor princess and the Slytherin prince. Granger and Malfoy. Hermione and Draco. They were a thing. Mind you, no one else knew. It was best that way, they had said, we can take things slowly.

"Hermione?"

"Mph?"

"What's your favourite colour?"

"Huh?"

"Your favourite colour, Hermione. What is it?"

"Why?"

"We hardly know each other."

"Fair point."

"What is it then?"

"Purple. Like a lavender purple."

"So lilac?"

"I guess."

"That was Lockhart's favourite colour too, you know."

"Yep."

"You don't think that's-"

"Nope. What about you? What's your favourite colour?"

"Green."

"No surprises there."

"Let's see...favourite animal?"

"Cat. I miss Crookshanks so much. You?"

"Owl."

"There's no surprises from you is there?"

"Nope."

He laughed and leant over the sofa, kissing her gently on the forehead.

"I love you Hermione."

"I know Draco."

He turned away, the pain in his chest too much to bear. He had told her he loved her so many times, but never heard it in response.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You tell me right now, Draco Malfoy."

"It's nothing."

But it was something. Why couldn't she tell why he was upset.

"You never say it."

"Say what?"

"Stop playing dumb Hermione."

"I'm not playing dumb."

"Then why won't you realise you never tell me you love me?"

"Draco-"

"Forget it."

"Please Draco. I feel something for you. I know that. It's just too soon for me to throw about the word love after what happened with Ron. I'm sorry Draco. Please."

"Really?"

She nodded.

"I'm sorry Hermione. I didn't think about it that way."

"It's okay."

He smiled, then walked over to his room.

Hermione sighed. She had lied to him, and she felt awful. She did love him. She really did. But if she was going to write about the real him, she needed to know how he reacted to everything, including heartbreak.
