The birds chirped happily as a small child's footsteps were heard down the hallway. "Mama! Father!" The small boy jumped onto his parents's bed. His mother sat up and gave her son a smile. "Darling, whatever is the matter?" His mother asked. "Today's my birthday!" The young boy exclaimed with joy. His mother turned to look at her husband.

She shook him lightly and he groaned. He soon began to stir. He sat up and looked at the boy in front of him. "What is it little Gustave?" His father asked. "Today's my birthday father!" The young boy exclaimed. "Already? Wow, it's surprising how fast time flies." Erik said. "Well why don't you go downstairs for a little while, while me and your father get dressed. Okay?" Christine said. The young boy nodded and headed down the stairs. They heard the footsteps pound against the wood.

Christine put on a dress while her husband dressed in a black suit. "So, what kind of present would Gustave want?" Christine asked her husband. "I hear there's a pet shop just down the street that just opened up." Erik replied. "Do you think Gustave would like a pet?" Christine asked. "I really don't know. Maybe, we'll have to wait and see." He said.

The couple headed down the stairs and Christine started to make breakfast. After they soon ate, they walked down the street. Carriages rolled past them while people were opening up shops. "It sure is a beautiful day out." Erik said. His cane tapped onto the sidewalk and they soon arrived at the small pet store.                                                                                                                                                         A sign hung in front of it saying: Les animaux de compagnie qui en ont besion?

"Well this looks like the place." Erik said. They entered the small shop and saw many pets in cages. Cats meowed while parrots chirped. "Well, pick anything you wish Gustave." Erik said. Gustave wandered around the store and looked at the pets. Erik walked up to the cashier and he looked down from his newspaper. "Well hello monsieur. How is your day going?" Erik asked.

The clerk looked up from his newspaper. He took a puff from his cigar. He saw the tall, slender man in front of him. "Well hello there good sir. Whatever would you like?" The clerk asked. "Father! Father!" Gustave exclaimed. Erik looked over at his son who was over by a large black cage. "Come look at this!" Gustave called. "Just a moment monsieur." Erik said.

He walked over to where his son was. "Whatever is it Gustave?" He asked. His son was pointing to a small siamese cat. "I want it." Gustave said. "Okay, if that's what you want." Erik said. He picked up the cage and walked over to the clerk.

He set the cage onto the desk. "Oh, I see you have found one of our most rare types. Interesting." The man said. "How much is it?" Erik asked the man. "Hmm. About $400 francs." The man said. "400?!" Erik's voice startled little Gustave and he hid behind his mother. "Lord, you must be kidding!" Erik said. "Sorry good sir, but it's what it is." The man said.

Erik dug into his coat pocket and mumbled while searching for cash. He pulled out a bag of money and dropped it onto the desk. "It's all we have. I swear." Erik said. The clerk greedily  grabbed all the money and counted them. "The cat's yours. Now shoo." The man said.

Once they exited the shop, Gustave looked down at the small cat. "I wonder what I could name it." Gustave said. "Well it's your cat, why can't you name it?" His mother asked. Gustave shrugged. "I know a great name. How about Ayesha?" Erik said. "That's a great name papa. Ayesha it is!" Gustave said. Christine smiled at her small child who was now growing up so fast.
