I wake up with bleary eyes in a hospital bed, a machine beeping steadily beside me. I sit up and look around trying to figure out where I am. There's no windows so I suspect still in the camp. I hear someone groan beside me and look over to see Blair fast asleep.
"Willa you're awake thank god!" Exclaims Henry walking in and hugging me. "What happened after I fell unconscious?" I ask him when he lets go. Henry ruffles his hair and sighs sitting next to my bed. "Lord Massarotti was taken away for questioning and they're still trying to get answers from him now" He answers. My memories of right before I fainted come flooding back and I distinctly remember Henry saying that the greasy haired man was his father. "Is it true Henry? Is he your dad?" I ask quietly. His eyes darken with anger. "Unfortunately yes. When I was young he was always the perfect father. He looked after me in every way possible but a lot changed when my mother was killed by hunters" Henry says in a barely audible voice.
Henry had always come across as a carefree and happy person when it came to his personal life but in this moment I cant help but feel I'm meeting a different side to Henry that he doesn't reveal to many. "When mum died he changed a lot. Became obsessive about power and how he could gain as much of it as possible. He wanted revenge on the Hunters that took my mothers life. When I turned 17 and got the chance to come here I took it and haven't looked back. He never tried to contact me. Up until now" He sighs. It takes me a minute to process what Henry has told me. "Henry why were hunters after your mother?" I ask curiously. He laughed in a sad way. "Do you think people like us could exist without others wanting to kill us? Conjurers have been hunted for centuries by a powerful group of humans known simply as 'The Hunters'. Many think they actually descended from us due to their strength and speed but that doesn't stop them from wanting to rid the world of us. There's not many hunters left anymore but one managed to kill my mother when she was coming home from work when I was fourteen" He explains.
I try to get my head around this idea of people wanting to kill Conjurers. I guess it makes sense, in tv shows where ever there's supernatural characters someone always wants to kill them. But in the tv shows I watch, the supernatural creatures are dangerous. Are conjurers dangerous? Are we as scary as the evil demon-like creatures on tv?
"Are you okay Willa? You're looking pale again?" Henry says nervously. I nod slowly. "I'm just trying to get my head around all of this. I'm so sorry about your mum Henry" I respond. He nods his head but doesn't respond. We sit there quietly for a few minutes before another question pops into my head and I cant help but ask Henry.
"Don't you want revenge?"
Henry looks at me and shakes his head. "Revenge won't change the fact my mother is dead. I don't feel the need to make it even with the Hunters. When my mum died, I thought dad and I would grow even closer but it went the opposite way. His revenge became all he could think about. I guess that made me never want to be like that so I never felt the need for it".
"I'm so sorry Henry I never knew" I murmur.
"I never told anyone Willa it isn't your fault. If anything all of this is my fault for not alerting the Elders of my father's obsessions. I am wondering how he found out about you though," Henry says stroking his chin as he thinks. At that moment Spencer walks in. In seconds I have him up against the wall about to burn him with my hands when Henry yells, "Willa no! This is the real Spencer!".
I drop him instantly feeling terrible. "Sorry Spencer" I say anxiously. "It's okay. I'd be trying to kill me too after whats been happening recently" He says with a nervous laugh. "What's up Spence why are you here?" Henry says sounding all business. "I came to update you all on the situation with Lord Massarotti. The questioning has been fruitless. All he says is that Willa is the key to defeating the Hunters over and over. As if the Elders don't know that" Spencer snorts. "That's it? That's why he broke into the camp and almost killed Blair?" I say in shock. Spencer nods. "Someone's been spreading rumours about you on the outside Willa. You'll need to keep your head down for a while" Henry says seriously. "Wait so how long has he been infiltrating the camp for then?" I ask worriedly. "Since the Nathan Marx incident" Spencer replies. This Spencer is different to the copy. His wavy hair is falling in his eyes and there's a more genuine warmth to him than before. I don't know how I couldn't have spotted the difference.
"Anyways I just wanted to let you all know that its going pretty badly at the moment. I think they'll put him to trial as quickly as possible so they can decide what punishment is appropriate. I need to get back for the next meeting, I hope you feel better soon Willa" Spencer says leaving quickly. I look over at Blair and see she hasn't moved a muscle since I woke up. "Is she going to be alright Henry?" I ask looking back over into Henry's sad face. "We don't know. She hit her head really hard Willa. At this stage we're just waiting for her to wake up" He says softly.
I look at Blair's sleeping figure again and pray to whoever's up there that she'll be okay.
