After Daniel's mom dropped me off yesterday, I walked in the front door and waved at her so she knew that I got inside safely.
I shut the door and pressed my back up against it and sighed, smiling a little.
Carson has this thing, this ability, to just be so... So smooth. Like, he could tell you to go to hell in such a way that you look forward to the trip. Tactful.
I thought about this as I stalked to 3rd period. I'm super happy that we're on pep rally schedule.
"Talk to me later!" Hailie exclaims as she turns the other way.
"I will!" I call after her.
Do I want to tell her what happened?
What if it wasn't anything?
"You need your textbook." Mrs. Malone says, looking at my empty arms.
I walk in anyway. There are always spare textbooks lying around anyway.
The back corner of the room where I sit is empty.
I take my backpack off and put it next to my desk. Suddenly, there's a loud crashing of chairs behind me.
I turn around, startled, and see Charlie laying amidst a bunch of overturned chairs.
I can't help but laugh. For some reason, he's always playing with the chairs in the back of the room.
"What are you doing?" I ask him.
"I like chairs." He says, getting up and restacking them.
Pfft. He's a lil' weird.
I read the board and see that we don't have a warm up, so I just play on my phone for a little bit.
The final bell rings, and Emily speedily walks to her seat.
"Hi, Emily." I greet her.
"Hello." She says monotonely.
"Could you hand me that textbook on the counter over there?" I ask politely.
She turns and grabs the book from its spot and throws it at me.
"Thanks..."
Mrs. Monroe peppily strides into the classroom, her long navy maxi dress flowing behind her.
"Alright, all of you who were standing up are being counted tardy." She says loudly.
A few groans float through the air followed by people angrily plopping into their seats.
"First, I'm going to hand back the tests from last week, and then we're going to work on vocabulary." Mrs. Malone shuffles some papers.
She walks around the room handing out the graded tests, some almost full of red pen marks.
When I get my test back, I almost gasp.
67!
"Emily, what did you get on your test?" I ask, leaning to the right.
"93." She doesn't look up from her book.
How could I have gotten an F on this test?
Mrs. Malone assumes her position at the front of the classroom.
"Now, I want you to do all of the chapter 16 vocabulary. You may work with partners if you want." She declares.
Everyone jumps out of their seats to go and sit with their friends. Amanda and Anna sit in front of me.
"Who are you working with, Jada?" Amanda asks me.
"Oh, i'm just gonna work by myself." I tell her.
