I awoke to a door opening and closing as if someone had left a room or entered a room. I slowly opened my eyes to find I was in Luke's and my room. The sheets still contained his scent, but it was faint and almost gone. It felt like I was losing him again. I moved my legs to yank the sheets off so that I could keep his scent with me until it faded for good, but pain lashed through my left thigh the second I moved it. I screamed in pain and suddenly the door was slammed open. In the doorway stood Jason and Kayla who looked relived, but also worried.
"How are you feeling?" Kayla asked sitting down beside me.
"I... How are you two here? I thought I only knew of this place." I asked as Kayla looked over at Jason.
"Austin Prowler told us we could find you here." Jason mumbled.
"H-He shouldn't have told you of this place. It has nothing to do with your group and it's not your house." I growled as Kayla stood and back up into Jason.
Jason placed his hand on Kayla's shoulder as in a reassuring way. I watched them confused by this sudden reassuring way just as the sound of sirens caught my ears. Something wasn't right. Why would there be sirens coming here? This place is hidden deep in the mountains unless someone found it and reported it to the police. What if Maria told the police? She's been upset with me for a long time and last night was the first time she acted upon her thoughts towards me.
"You two should leave..." I whispered as I struggled to stand up.
"What? Why should we leave?" They protested at the same time.
I took a deep breath before standing up on one leg. They were staring at me, completely confused as I pulled the curtains over the window to hide us. A hand touched my shoulder, and I looked up at who's hand it was. Jason stood there with a concerned look on his face.
"April, what's going on?" Jason asked.
"Nothing." I mumbled looking away.
"Why do you keep pushing everyone away? You never did that before you moved down here!" Kayla yelled.
"SHH!" I growled as I peered through the curtains at the cop cars as they approached.
Jason looked through the curtains and his eyes widened before he looked at Kayla. Kayla walked over and peered out of the window and frowned at the sight of the cop cars. Why would they be wary of the cops? It's not like they have an animal control truck fit to keep humans and animals from escaping. As if I had summoned the truck, it turned around the corner. I could see the two people in the truck and frowned as I saw their glimmering eyes. They didn't have red eyes which must mean they were human beings and not vampires. What worried me the most was the fact they were coming towards my old home. I couldn't let them get in here and take all three of us. If I had to, I'd sacrifice myself for them to escape. I'll just slow them down anyways with how bad Maria had bit my leg.
"Kayla, Jason, there is an unfinished room down the hall. Go escape through there. I'll stay here and distract them so you two can escape. I'd just slow you down anyways if I was to go with." I spoke as calmly as possible.
"We're not letting you stay here. You're injured and can't fight well. We won't leave you here alone to let us escape. We'd feel guilty for just leaving you here all alone." Jason growled as he looked at me.
"We've gone through so much together already, April. I won't let you stay behind, even if it means risking my life in the process." Kayla spoke as she held my hands.
I watched them in shock as Kayla wrapped my right arm over her shoulders and took most of my weight. Jason wrapped my left arm over his shoulders and took the rest of my weight. They both began to walk forward as I limped along with them. I couldn't walk with the gaping wound Maria left behind. It could take me weeks or even months for me to recover from this. I doubt I would have been able to even change forms with how severely injured I was.
