I thought today was going to be like any normal day, where I wake up, eat some breakfast, then start my online classes.
But that didn't happen.
Today I woke up to loud pounding at the front door, which was very strange. Usually people called or my parents would go meet people somewhere, but never would anyone come over. I quickly got out of bed and threw on a over-sized hoodie over my t-shirt and put on some sweatpants and hurried to open the door.
I did not expect what I would find.
There at my doorstep, were two police men, they looked at me, then quickly turned away. One was quite tall with brown hair and what looked to be blue or green eyes. His complexion was very pale. The other was shorter by at least a foot, he had black hair and dark brown eyes, his complexion was dark. I stood there waiting for them to speak.
The taller one spoke first, talking more to my forehead then to my face, "Is this the Wayward household?"
I nodded. "Yes, and I am Indie Wayward." They nodded at each other.
The man spoke again," May we come in? We have some news that you need to hear." I thought for a moment, but nodded and moved aside so they could walk in. They did.
I pointed them toward the living area and they sat on one of the couches.
" Would you like any coffee?" I didn't know what to do in this situation so I just tried what they do in the movies.
The shorter man finally spoke, "No, thank you miss. The news we have for for you is much greater than coffee." He gestured toward the couch sitting straight across from them. I quickly sat down and propped my elbows on my knees and leaned forward.
The taller one spoke," My name is officer Jamison and this is my partner officer Walker." He nodded to the man next to him. I nodded. He continued. "We work in the apartment of homicides and murder investigations." He looked down at his hands folded in his lap. I stared blankly at them.
Officer Walker picked up the conversation, "Indie, well you see, your parents were found dead two hours ago." He kept his eye contact with me, but I dropped my head and stood up in disbelief.
I couldn't talk, And my breath came out in brisk gasps, I could only get one breathy word out, "How?" My hands were shaking at my sides.
They looked at each other, officer Jamison picked his head back up and started to talk, "They were found behind their office building, one of the workers noticed they went missing and started a search party, they were found about an hair and a half later. They were both were leaning against a wall. Your Father, Terry, was shot in the chest several times, your Mother, Lela shot once in the head." I stared at them in disbelief.
"Why did this happen to them? What did they do? Why were they in the back of their office?" I had so many questions, but not enough air to say them I felt my heart beating against my chest and my eyes started to water, but no tears came out. Officer Jamison answered, "No, it looked as though it was a fast death and there are pictures. Also we think they may have been called to the back of the building", I nodded and stared down at the floor. Who would killed them? They were such boring people with uninteresting lives and nothing more.
"I want to see the pictures and who did it?" officer Walker stood up and paced the room, "Of course you can see the pictures, but as for the who? We can't quite answer that." I sat back down, bring my knees to my chest and hugged them. He continued,"Is there anyone you know that may have done this?" I shook my head. My parents never let me out of the house since what happened back in middle school.
The officers nodded and stood up, officer Jamison handed me a envelope, "When you're ready open that. It's the pictures." I nodded, they left closing the door behind them.
I sat in silence for a long time just thinking about how I would never see them again, how my life will forever be different. I opened the envelope slowly and carefully, the first picture is what finally made me believe. One tear fell down my face, then another, until my face turned red and swelled up from me rubbing my cheeks. The envelope became soaked by my tears. The last picture my parents will ever be in. My mother and father were holding hands, blood all over their clothes. My mother wore a white dress, she had an important meeting today. My father wore a black suit, like he did everyday. My mother's head laid on my father's shoulder and his head laid on hers. My mother had dark tan skin, big dark blue eyes and beautiful thick brown hair, she was so beautiful. My father was extremely tall with dirty blonde hair, paler skin, and light blue eyes, all the ladies swooned over him, or at least that is what he told me. I am a complete mixture of the two I have light blue eyes, tan skin that wasn't as dark as my mother, but also not as pale as my father. I am short like my mother, but I had deep dimples like my father. My hair was the only difference I had long blonde hair that shone in the light. Though right now my face and eyes were red.
My life will be forever be changed and there is nothing I can even do about it. I sank to floor rubbing my eyes and sobbed, well actually I wailed. I wailed in pain, my heart pounded and my stomach twisted I felt like throwing up. I cried more than I have ever cried before. I brought my knees to my chest and I wept.
