It was way after hours,
I had texted Joshua that I'd be home late,
And now I was gropping in the dark,
with a small flashlight that could barely lit up a 2cm surface area.In the Files Room.
I had no idea how I did it,
but here I was in the Files roomeven after he told me I could never access it unless I was planning on being a pathologist.
(which I wasn't)
"Please Javani please, " I pleaded.
Tears had always. made my punishment reduced both at school and at home,
So I hoped he would not immune when I started I started bowling my eyes out.
This time I did it intentionally,
You know what they say about desperate situations.
However it took a little bit more time,
for Javani to melt. But as soon as I saw the grimace on his face, I knew I had won.
The same grimace my teachers had on their faces just before letting me off the hook.
I'd never really cared to know why they grimaced.
Maybe it was a grimace of defeat
or maybe I looked really ugly when I cried.
I'd ask some other day,
But at the time , that to me, had been a grimace of victory,
I was going to enter the Files room.
"Eva I love my job more than anything, I can't give consent to what you want, "
" But...? " I asked hopefully,
my cheeks tear streaked." I've seen it in movies, "he said swallowing nervously,
" Sometimes the keys are usually at the wrong place at the wrong time,
break ins happen, "he said looking straight at me.Oh my God,
Javani was going to let me get in,
As long as it looked like a case of forgotten keys.A break in.
I bumped into stuff, hit
my toe at on a sharp edge.I bit my lower lip, to stop myself from screaming and ruining everything.
I finally saw a row of files, under the shelf marked PEDIATRICS.
In alphabetical order,
That'd be easy, I thought.
I was looking for Achmed 's file.
I thought wrong,It was the alphabetical
order of surnames.Achmed Dado.
His surname was Dado.
And turns out a lot of kids had surnames starting with D.
When I finally found it,
there was a film of dust on the file, and when I opened it, I had to place a hand tightly over my mouth to prevent me from sneezing.I skimmed over the document,
And went straight to the bottom of the document.I saw what I was looking for.
References, contacts, addresses.I searched through my pockets, and realized I didn't have a pen,
So I decided to memorise Aisha's number.
(girls are really good at that)I put it back, and scurryied out of the dark morgue.
I looked around,
(at that time I knew exactly how it felt to be a burglar)
and left the keys exactly where Javani had 'forgotten' them.Dangling from the keyhole.
It was getting dark really fast, but just like the rest of my family, I was avoiding home.
(How ironic, avoiding a situation I had created.)
That night when I asked my sister if I could sleep in her bed,
she looked at me strangely, but eventually created some space for me,
I wished I had been closer to my sister, known her better.
Not just see her as typical annoying baby sister. If my plan went accordingly, I would not be with my sister let alone in the same bed as her.
At least not in a long time.
