I thought you hated him?" Dick asked.
He was accompanying me to Metropolis, though I didn't need it. I knew he was bored, but he wouldn't admit it. Either way, I did enjoy the company.
"Hate is a strong word," I replied, "I don't hate Uncle Clark, or else I wouldn't call him Uncle Clark. You were there, I forgave him."
But I didn't forget. You can never forget a thing like that, especially if he knew them. Killing my parents was so much worse when they truly were friends.
"I still can't believe this. Your parents were superheroes?"
"Apparently. Runs in the family."
We swung over the border between Gotham and Metropolis. Instantly, the air became clearer and the moon seemed brighter. Even though both cities were right next to each other, they still were so different.
Dick and I swung onto the Daily Planet building. I retracted my line, shoving it in my utility belt, "You know, you didn't have to come with me."
"My sister's on a self-discovery mission, of course I want to come!" Dick replied, "Besides, it was a slow night in Gotham."
I shrugged. Both of us were in our costumes. We were supposed to be on patrol, but, of course, like the rebellious little shits we are, we weren't.
"Superman!" I shouted.
Dick cupped his hands around his mouth, "Uncle Clark!"
"It's not like you two to visit Metropolis."
Superman rose on the other side of the building. While I had forgiven him for my parents death, every time I saw him, their screams echoed in my mind. I couldn't help but flinch whenever that happened.
"Lucy's on a mission of self-discovery," Dick told him, "I'm just along for the ride."
Clark lifted an eyebrow. He landed on the building just feet from us, "Anything I can help with?"
"Yes, actually, do you remember Silver and Gold?" I asked him.
"Yes, they fought alongside The Justice League years ago," Clark replied, "Silver was a brilliant engineer, even better than Bruce, and Gold was an amazing martial artist. They were good friends of mine."
"Did you know their names?"
"No, nobody did, they didn't have any," Clark shook his head, "When we asked them, they told us that, where they come from, names were not common."
"Were they aliens?" Dick asked.
I glared at him, "Of course they weren't aliens, Dick."
"No, they weren't," Clark replied, "They weren't from here, though, that's for sure."
"What makes you say that?"
"Their heartbeats were different. The beat was irregular, unlike any other human. They were abnormally pale as well, and burned easily, as if they had never been in the sun before," Clark explained.
"Whatever happened to them?" I asked.
Clark shrugged, "I don't know. They vanished off the map. About fifteen years later, you showed up."
Dick glanced at me. All the clues lined up. Silver and Gold vanishing the same year Eion Brimsey was born, me showing up exactly fifteen years later, and the absence of records for Ann-Marie and Perseus Brimsey.
"They vanished because Silver was pregnant," I replied, "Their son, Eion, died when he was five. Barely a year later, they adopted me."
"Wait, you mean-" Clark's eyes widened.
I nodded, "Silver and Gold were my parents, Ann-Marie and Perseus Brimsey. I'm on a mission to trace my heritage back to my biological parents, and, hopefully to find out where I came from."
All of this seemed like a coincidence, but I knew it wasn't. My being adopted by superhero parents that didn't come from our world couldn't have been coincidence. Especially when that nun was so terrified to tell me more.
"I can't believe this," Clark muttered, "Good luck on your search, Lucy. I have to go."
He vanished without a trace. Dick and I watched on. All the pieces formed a puzzle in my mind. There was something else, something behind all of this, but I couldn't quite figure it out.
"Well, that was helpful," Dick glanced at me.
I nodded, "This isn't going to be as easy as I had hoped. Nobody knew them before, they didn't even come from our planet, or our dimension, or whatever. I'm beginning to think them adopting me wasn't a coincidence."
"What do you mean?" Dick asked as we began to swing again.
"The Nun back at the convent in Greece was terrified to tell me more," I explained, "I'm adopted by two retired superheroes, and my twin sister is 'killed'. Five years later, my parents are killed and I become a superhero. This can't be coincidental."
"Nothing ever is when it comes to us."
"Very true, Dick, very true."
"Come on, let's get home," Dick stated, "I'm starving."
"Ditto."
