We were nearly back at the concrete city, Julie had said four more miles or so the last time I had asked. we had obviously taken longer than we should have because the sun was starting to go down. needless to say we sped up. we had been walking in silence except for the noise of my loss of breath. the rushing and the weight of the bags were really taking there toll on me.

"Nora we have to stop. R can barely breath." Julie turned to me and made her point final by making me sit down on the hood of a car with a smashed back end and shattered windows. Nora joined me and looked up at the orange sky.

"Jules, we don't have long." Nora was shaking her head, she looked the way I never thought id see her, defeated. I looked down at my shoes it was my fault we taking so long.

"well we better go then." I said swinging my back pack on my shoulder, standing up and starting to walk in the direction of home. Nora followed suit and Julie grabbed my hand.

"no you need to stop. you cant keep going and if you pass out or something...well "

"were all screwed." Nora finished her sentence for her.

"I'm fine now come on we need to go." I carried on walking and again Nora followed.

"R why are you being so stubborn? we can take five minuets to sit down its not a big deal. we have ages before it dark."

"Jules we have like two hours tops, its a three hour walk home. you know that you've done it enough times." Nora was staring at her looking more irritated than her usual self.

"Nora. your a doctor! you should know better than anyone that R shouldn't be doing this it could kill him or something." Julie was looking a little red in the face, I stopped walking when Nora turned round to face her best friend.

" Okay Jules, one I'm not a doctor I'm a goddamn nurse! and secondly of course I know R shouldn't be doing this but I also no your wrong an me and him are right we have to keep going because you know better than anyone that once its dark out there is next to nothing we can do to stay safe!"

" yeah well Nora you and me both know its not impossible to stay out in the dark we've BOTH done it before! more than friggin' once." Julie and Nora's little spat carried on  getting a little louder than I thought safe, all the while the sun continued to make its way down westwards. I sighed and took a few steps away from them after my first attempt to break them apart was so futile. that's when I noticed it, a few meters down the road one of the ominous skeletal figures that caused me and everyone else that walked the plant more than a little trouble. gaping eye sockets, wasted body and degenerative features. like some grotesque excuse for one of us.

"Julie, Nora."... no reply there arguing continued.

"Girls. you might want to see this. your kinda  atr-racting its attention." still there pointless arguing continued, and the boney monster cracked its neck from side to side, a warning.

"girls!" I reached for the pistol at my belt, the one I was handed with five rounds. the one I had NO idea how to use, and raised it.

it charged with some guttural animal sound, straight at me.

the sound of the gun shot rang in the now empty air. I was coated in sticky black mess the consistency of wet mud. I turned around, away from the dead monster to face Julie and Nora. they were both stood painstakingly still, faces drained of colour. I was feeling strange, like there was something tightening in my stomach, a knot getting bigger and tighter making its way up in to my chest, making my breathing heavy, making my face red, my fists tighten and my eyes narrow oddly. I think... I was angry. Then the knot snapped.

"Are you both quite done! you see while you w-ere stood there out in the open while its still getting darker might I add, having your stupid little spat over nothing important, I was left to fire a gun that I don't even know how to use at that things chest, because you two think its more fun to stand there and shout at each other!" I was out of breath and defiantly angry.

"R I'm so sorry, I didn't, we didn't think. I cant believe you managed that, you , you could have died or, or." Julie was still in the same position as when I turned around, Nora was scuffing the ground with her feet, but she had her pistol in her hand.

" can we please just go home?" I asked.

it was a resounding yes.
