her eyes batted shut, everything began to fade away, and not too long after she did too. sunlight was beating on her dark skin, she began to be more familiar with her eyelids. drowning in red, ever since she was young she had always loved that color. whether it was the color of the beaten up soles of her shoes or the band holding all her hair back. falling off of kindergarten playgrounds seeing her knees dripping with that fiery color, the stinging never seemed bother her. as fire, and clouds became her reality, she remembered how this happened to her. not complaining about the circumstances she questioned how everything took place that day.
when may was just young when she knew she wanted to fight, she was tough. always has been and always will be. she roughed it out with boys, and shot toy guns but they were never enough. she never could grasp an actual trigger. when she was old enough she got a gun for her 16th birthday, she learned how to shoot far distances and even backwards. with the boys they would all talk about fighting and guns, it was their thing.
"guys i shot the toughest bullet the other day, it was perfect. i hit my dad's old, and dusty wine bottle with one clear shot! it was awesome." she babbled on to her friends.
"it was the toughest shot i have ever seen!" her friend andy continued.
may remembered that day, it was also the same day she was going off to fight in the war. being one of the only woman in the troop she had to prove that she was tough, that she was just like the rest. she tied her hair back, and stood tall, she wasn't taking anything less than respect from the other soldiers she was enrolled with. she arrived, chills ran miles up and down her back and she shook hands with a tight grip. it was april 11th in fort sumpter shadows and darkness stole the sky. waking up the next morning the sun crept back up the sky and placed himself right in the center. he smiled at her, she didn't smile back. she held her face stone cold, it was time. they marched onto the field and that's when it all started.
"boys remember, the only thing you can be now is unstoppable and tough. now go out there and be exactly that!" encouraged general anderson.
she shuffled away with her gun, ready to aim and fire. may could shoot simple targets in her sleep, and maybe that was for the better. because when things seemed to get tough she couldn't seem to stay awake, but she still pushed her limits. soldiers on her side shots fired, shot and dead next to her, in front of her. she ran, shots fired. may rolled and hid, while the bloodbath was running in front of her. shots fired, they got her. they're game of hide and seek but with blood and wounds was over. it was all over, but she didn't mind one bit. because, she always got what she wanted. so when her eyes closed shut for the last time, she died exactly how she planned it.
