Delilah brushed her curly hair into a top knot. "Xo Tour Life" blasted from her phone as she smoothed down her edges with the new Eco Styler gel.
"Baby I am not afraid to...die," Delilah sang, hitting the toothbrush on the edge of the gel container. It was three weeks later. Things were actually beginning to resemble normal again.
At least, as normal as it got in Delilah's world.
"How long you gon take? We have graduation practice in an hour." Kina poked her head into the bathroom.
It was the beginning of May, meaning the school year was winding down to a close. Delilah had missed a couple weeks of school due to the car accident and the madness with her mom, but she doubled down on her work and made up for it.
"Girl I'm not worried about Williams." Delilah was referring to Mrs. Williams, the AP Economics teacher and the bane of every senior's existence. She was the teacher that played no games about late work, put you in ISS if you were late over three times, and had no problem failing your ass if the wind blew the wrong way. Of course, the school put her in charge of graduation rehearsal and prom.
Delilah being Delilah, she was somewhat on the old lady's good side.
Kina took out a pair of cuffed American Eagle jeans and a Tommy Hilfiger crop top. "Yeah, okay. Fuck around and don't walk across that stage, Gunz gon go in," She joked. Gunz stayed on top of Delilah about her education. He wouldn't even answer her calls if he felt like she was neglecting her schoolwork for him.
Delilah rolled her eyes but smiled, she knew Kina was right. "Guess who text me last night."
"Who?" Kina was ready for some tea.
"Nobody like that. My Uncle Tracy hit me up."
Kina curled her lip. "The last time you seen him, he was giving an envelope or some shit to that nigga Gunz beat up, ain't it?"
"Yup," Delilah popped her lips. "I've been staying clear of him since then but he just text me talking bout where have I been, can we meet for dinner tonight." She put on a stank expression.
"It might be worth going to," Kina suggested, applying lotion on her feet. "Like, it never occurred to you he might know a little something about whatever your loony ass mama and Diesel got going on?"
"Honestly, I've tried to put that shit out my mind. Gunz almost got killed, our relationship was in shambles...maybe they're betting on us feeding into it. As long as nobody tryna kill us, I don't think we should care what they're doing." Delilah walked back into the room from the bathroom. "What's that face for?"
"Just think you should try to stay one step ahead of people you know are out to get you. Sometimes I think you wanna ignore this because your mom into it but...you gotta accept she's an opp. Mama or not." Kina gave her a sympathetic look and ran her fingers through her hair. "We taking my car?"
"We can." Delilah pressed her lips together. Kina was right, as always, and she didn't like it. Even though she never had a typical mother daughter relationship with her mom, it still hurt that she'd be apart of some shit to really hurt her.
...
"Daddy!" River whined, flying up the stairs. "I can't find my Manolo boots and I have to be at the school in thirty minutes!"
