When your body goes through a traumatic accident, it's said your life flashes before your eyes.
Delilah laid on her back, eyes open and body still. Her lips were dry, she could feel that the back of her throat had taken on a sandpapery texture. A throbbing headache wouldn't leave her, nor an aching pain in her lower neck.
She looked around weakly.
Why is nobody here for me?
A single warm tear traveled down the side of her face. If Gunz had any type of movement in his body, he'd be at her bedside. That, mixed with a terrible feeling swirling in her gut had Delilah convinced he was dead.
She let her head sink into the pillow, giving it a rest. Delilah closed her eyes and prayed, God, if Gabriel is alive, I swear I will spend every day thankful for his presence and working to prove myself a worthy woman.
Gunz brought a certain calm to her spirit she had never before experienced, he was like a piece she never knew was missing. The thought of life without him terrified her.
Delilah buried her face in her hands as her features crumpled. A devastating wave of fear, guilt, regret, and heartbreak had crashed through her body. The pain was so intense, she could not even bring forth the energy to cry. All Delilah could do was scream, a sound filled with emotion and hurt. It was the cry of a traumatized woman.
As she rocked herself back and forth, whispering prayers to God, the sliding door to her hospital room was thrown back. "Miss Johnson, Miss Johnson!" Her ears made things sound if she were under water.
Dr. Nyugen held Delilah's shoulders firm, but gentle as she shook. "Delilah, you are at St. Candler's hospital. You were involved in an automobile accident in which you were thrown from the car. You are safe. Can you tell me what day it is?" Delilah felt as if the room was spinning for a moment, but Dr. Nyugen coaxing her gently aided in Delilah connecting with his eyes. The room stilled, but the raging pounding of her heart still pounded on. She took a deep breath.
"It's Tuesday." At that moment, two nurses came in and began hurridley checking her vitals. Delilah knew everyone was speaking clear English, but as her friends spilled into the room and the nurses kept speaking it serious tones about blood pressure elevated and panic attack she became overwhelmed. So many bright, worried eyes were peering at her, questioning her.
Faye, "Sis, I'm so glad you're okay. Do you remember what happened right before the accident?"
Smiley, his eyes solemn but face easygoing, "You good, Blue. Everything on you is good, you don't have to worry about anything. Just relax, shawty."
Andrea's lips were pursed and her eyes held tears, "Why didn't he jump too, Delilah?"
This snapped her to attention. Looking from one person to the other, she asked loudly, "Where is Gabriel?"
The room quieted.
Kina grabbed her hand and spoke with a strangled voice, tears clogging her throat.
"Deelie...he's-"
"No," Delilah had changed her mind that quick. She didn't want to hear the answer, she wasn't fully prepared for the answer.
Kina grabbed her arms and slowly sat on her bed.
"He's in a coma," Kina said softly.
Delilah's body shook with silent sobs. She opened her mouth to speak, but only a wounded cry came out.
"It's very touch and go right now but the doctors are hopeful," Fiona spoked up in her mousy voice.
"I said, why didn't he jump too?"
