JOCKO

I scanned the titles of the books that were on the shelves and sighed. What was I thinking? I was looking at books for thirteen year olds, perhaps almost fifteen for my two and a half year old daughter. Although, I reminded myself that Renesmee could phase for a seven year old plus she had the intelligence of someone who'd graduated with a very good degree from a very good college. I picked up the final book in the Roman Mysteries series and added it to the pile. "Hey Bells," Jake said cheerily, coming along. "What are you doing?" I grinned slightly. "Getting books for Renesmee. She's read every book in the house and she's begging for more. She's driving me insane!"Jacob laughed. "Oh well. Hey, I saw a couple of these Roman Mysteries round the house. They any good?"

"Well she loves them."

Jacob glanced back and I saw Sam Uley dragging a boy away from the Wolves section of the library. The boy looked almost sixteen but I could tell from experience with Jake, he was much younger. "He's twelve. His name's Jocko," Jacob informed.

"Poor kid," I sighed, shaking my head. It was awful, he was destined for a life of killing and uncontrollable transformations.

"He's come up from Makah," Jake added.

"Makah?" I said frowning. A fuzzy human memory flicked into my head. "Wasn't that where..."

"Embry's mum came from? Yup. He's Embry's step brother. He also knows who Embry's father is."

"You're kidding!" I gawked.

"Nope."

"Well? Who is it?"

There was a long sigh. "Billy," Jacob said heavily. I gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. Finding out your best friend was your half brother had to be tough.

"Rachel and Rebecca are coming over to give Billy a long lecture."

"Rachel and Rebecca? Your sisters?"

Jacob nodded. "Bella," Sam greeted.

"Sam," I replied nodding. "Jake's told me about Jocko."

Sam nodded sadly. "He hasn't finally joined yet but he's hitting the growth spurt and we now are ordering it to be explained to the new kids."

"How big is the pack now?" I asked curiously. Sam laughed. "Nearly forty," he grinned. "We're glad. It means we're safer, plus we can have lots of small packs."

I chuckled. It was because of me and my family that the pack was getting bigger. "Oh, and congratulations to you and Emily. Honeymoon any good?""Great!" Sam said.

"Oi! Get off me you wretched old man!" Sam, Jake and I jumped and we looked round and saw Jocko struggling with a librarian. "Aw, crap," Sam groaned and he trudged away. Jacob wrinkled his nose. "I better go help," he said, not sounding particularly thrilled. "I'll drop by and see Nessie later, 'kay?"

"Sure thing," I said, heading towards the checkout counter. As I passed Sam and Jacob trying to pull Jocko away from the withering man on the floor, Jocko looked at me and hissed angrily. "Bloodsucker!" he growled. My mouth dropped. The term hadn't been used between the Quiluetes and the Cullens for two years. Jake hit Jocko on the head. "Shut up!" he scolded Jocko. "If you want to stay here, better learn some respect." Sam turned to me apologetically. I shook my head. "Not your fault," I said sternly and left to get back home.
