WHERE WE LEFT OFF: Kayla went out for a walk in Jönköping and got lost, meeting Adam (known as ‘leather jacket boy’) in the process. She later bumped into Jonas who took her back to her place.
That same day.
CHAPTER 8: NEA
“Wow, your place is absolutely stunning!” I said, holding my fourth glass of wine in my hand.
My two best friends had just finished showing me the house they got together. They did such a great job with the renovations and decorating it.
“I know, right?” one of them said. That was Novalie. “We put in so much effort and money to this place. I’m so proud of it.”
“Maybe you should move in with us, too,” the other one, Sofie, said as she gently bumped her shoulder against mine.
“You have no idea how much I want to,” I said, as we walked back into the kitchen, our shoes making a loud noise against the parquet flooring. “I haven’t found a job ever since those bastards fired me – what was it? Two months? Three months? Whatever – ago.”
“More wine?” offered Sofie.
“Oh yes, please,” I said, handing over my glass.
Novalie laughed. “Nea, you’re already a bit tipsy and the party hasn’t even started, yet. Cut down on the wine for now,” she said, taking the filled glass Sofie was handing me.
They were hosting a housewarming party later that evening. I was invited, obviously.
We were really tight friends back in school, then we sort of drifted apart after we finished. About three months before though, I was at a house party with Johan and some friends of his, and that’s where I met Novalie and Sofie again. Then we kept in touch, started hanging out again, and everything had been so good since then.
Before we became friends again, I always felt like I was just existing on this safe boat, but when we rekindled our friendship; they changed me. And I liked the person I had become. I felt like I was finally alive.
“Oh don’t ruin the party now!” Sofie said, taking back the glass and handing it to me. “Here you go, sweetheart.” She was my favourite; all fun.
Novalie sighed and sat down on one of the bar stools. “Anyway,” I continued with what I was saying, “ever since those bastards fired me for going to work with a hangover a bunch of times –”
“Could they even fire you for that?” Sofie said, narrowing her eyes as she leaned on the kitchen counter. “Like; is that even legal?”
I saw Novalie rolling her eyes. I always remembered her getting a tad bit annoyed at Sofie’s words because well; she wasn’t the brightest.
“Well, you’re supposed to go to work well and alert,” said Novalie, “not barely being able to function.”
“I haven’t been able to find a job since then,” I went on. “But, mum’s handing me out money, she’s not complaining about it, and it’s all good. It’s basically like a party every day!”
“And you get to hook up with hot guys,” Sofie added, winking at me.
“Everything’s great!” I finished, smiling at her.
“Speaking of hooking up with guys,” Novalie said, “are you still with – that band boy?” She wrinkled her nose as she said the last part of her sentence.
“Yes,” I said, taking a sip of wine.
“Does he know about the hooking up business?”
“Aha.”
