Like California Wildfire

Prologue

*Sapphire is five   

"Sapphire, sweat heart we have something to tell you." My Mommy calls. I run down the stairs of our big house.

"What is it Mommy?" I ask twirling my sandy blonde hair.

My Mommy sighs looking at my Dad, and he nods his head. "Close your eyes." She tells me and I do just that, since I love surprises so much.

Something is placed in my hands, making my smile grow wider. I wonder what it could be...... A ring? Maybe I can finally wear makeup like the girls on the tv,  "Open your eyes." My Daddy tells me and I open them excitedly looking down in my hand I see a locket with the face of a lion on it. I'm confused. I thought to myself.

"What's this?" I ask wondering why they just put a locket in my hand.

My Daddy sighs and comes down to my level, grabbing my little hands and looking me in the eye. "Sapphire, its about time you knew the family secret." He tells me and my mouth falls open.

"There's a family secret?" I ask with my high pitched voice. He nods his head, and a tear falls out of my left eye. "Why didn't you tewl me?" Another tear falls. "What's the secret?" I ask folding my arms across my chest.

He sighs and looks me in the eyes again, "We're not who you thought we were. We're something out of this world, something big, something nobody's ever written about. Sapphire we are......" Suddenly there is a bang on the door and tons of men rush in the house and take down my Dad.

My Mom runs upstairs with me and locks us in my room. "Sapphire, me and Daddy love you very much sweat heart, but its our time to go. " She hands me the locket that I must've dropped sometime during my conversation with Daddy. "Never loose this Sapphire, with this locket you will always have us with you, no matter where you are in the world." She tells me while crying. 

"Mommy what's going on?" I ask frightened. Tears pouring out of my own eyes. "Why are those men trying to hurt Daddy? Are we in trouble? What did we do wrong? Is it my fauwlt?" I gasps.

Mommy hugs me very tightly, and kisses me on the forehead. "Its not your fault Sapphire, its nobody's fault, its because of our bloodline, you see we have something special that most people don't have. We're not human baby girl." She says as I wipe the tears off of her face.

"Are those men going to kill us?" I ask, my little body shaking. Mommy shook her head, causing me to cry harder.

"You're not going to die Sapphire. You're going to run away as far as you can, and don't stop until you know its safe, somebody will find you. I love you so much sweety I wish it didn't have to end this way." She tells me sobbing and wiping the tears off of my face. "But its all going to be okay, I can promise you that." She tells me giving me one last squeeze.

She puts the locket on around my neck, and safely hooks it. "Mommy why don't you run wift me?" I plead while Mommy shakes her head.

"Its for your own safety Sapphire. So you'll never be hurt, nobody will ever break my little girls heart again." She whispered the last part to me. "Sapphire, in a minute I want you to run that way." She points towards the woods. "There's a little town not many people no of on the other side, I want you to go there, and stay there until you're a big girl, then the decision will be yours to make." She tells me and I nod wiping away another tear.

"I wove you Mommy." I tell her, knowing that this is serious.

"I love you to Sapphire Brown." She tells me. "Do not ever tell anyone you are a Brown Sapphire, it will come to haunt you."

"I won't Mommy I promise." I tell her.

"May the heart of the lion always be within you. Always remember that." She tells me and I nod.

"I will." There's banging on the door and Mommy whispers 'run' to me and I nod and open up the window. Just as I get on the other side I hear a loud bang and Mommy's screams and I jump down from the window, landing perfectly on both feet.  

I hear more screams from Mommy until all falls silent. I look over towards the front door and see Three big men carrying Daddy out of the house. "Daddy!" I scream as tears start rolling down my cheeks again. "Let him go!" I scream at the big men and run towards them. I hit the bald man with the big belly in the leg as hard as I could, causing Daddy's body to fall on the ground next to me. He wasn't breathing, his face was bruised up and his eyes were bigger than his sockets. Daddy's body felt weird, it was warm, but not warm like it was earlier, he was sticky.

The big man with the black hair tried to grab me so I hit him in his private part causing him to fall to his knees. "The little cunt! Get her Marv!" He screams at the guy with the blonde hair and I do the same to him hearing him say words that he shouldn't around a five year old. I kick the mean guy who is laying on the ground in his special spot for saying the bad words.

Then I run, I run just like Mommy told me to. I run through the woods heading towards that little town. After a few minutes of running in the woods I run into a little boy my age, causing us both to fall backwards. "Watch where your going!" The little boy screams and I jump up to help him up.

"Give me your hand." I tell him and he does, allowing me to pull him up to his feet. "I'm sorry, but I have to gow." I whisper to him, a tear falling out of my right eye.

He holds me by the shoulders and looks at me like I'm stupid. "Why do you have red eyes?" Curiosity laced his tone.

I shrugged my shoulders, " I don't know, Daddy has them too." I cry remembering him.

The little boy smiles evily back at me, "Looks like you and your Daddy are freaks." He teases, causing me to cry again.

"Daddy's dead! Never talk about him like that!" I scream. "Your yellow eyes are fweaky to!" I shove him out of my way and continue to run.

I run until the sun rises and I find a park bench to sleep on. I sleep on the cozy bench curled up in a ball. A few hours later, a man dressed in a suit, and a lady with a pencil skirt come up to the bench to wake me up. "Sweatheart I need you to come with us." The man says and I nod. 

The lady puts a blanket around my shoulders, "We're going to find you a nice home soon pretty girl. Just go back to sleep now." I nod and lay down in the car they placed me in and head back to sleep.
