Annabeth’s PoV:
Piper leaned in and whispered in my ear, “You know you can’t resist Percy’s puppy-dog face, right?”
I burst out laughing and say, “Fine I’ll tell you. Here goes. Well there was once this other demigod who managed to put her back to sleep using a very…special…form of magic,” I say slowly. “There is one single power that Gaea can’t understand. Like at all. She hates it.”
“And that form of power is…?” Percy questioned.
“Ok, you know how all the gods are actually the grandchildren of Gaea, right? And they each took on a special form of power. You know like, the Ocean, Lightning, the Underworld and so on. Gaea understood all of these because they were physical things. And she could battle each one of them in one way or another. But there was one goddess whose form of power Gaea would never be able to understand.” I reply.
“Yep. Go ahead and take all the time you want, while we go and put Gaea back to sleep. You can even tell us after the battle is over, okay?” Leo says sarcastically.
“Seriously Annabeth you do take forever,” Hazel says.
“Fine! Fine! You really want to know don’t you?” I say, extremely irritated. Everyone nods their head, looking expectantly at me.
“The only power that Gaea can’t, and won’t ever understand is Love,” I say quietly. Everyone looks really confused.
“Love, so you mean my mom’s power?” Piper asks.
“Yeah, Piper. Your mom,” I answer her and now everyone is even more confused.
“You guys are obviously not getting it. I’ll explain. Every god has something that is physical, like you can touch the Ocean and you can taste wine and so on, right? But there is one thing that you can’t see or touch, but that you can feel. You can feel love right? So being the crazy, tyrannical, angry Earth goddess that she is, Gaea cannot understand love. It’s been done before. See, Gaea wanted to use this woman for a sacrifice but her son said no and gave himself up instead, just to save his mom. Gaea thought he was being brave, but because she couldn’t understand love it was her downfall. It was something so powerful, that when she killed the boy the wails of grief from his mother were enough to put her back to sleep and crumble all of her actions,” I tell them. Slowly, looks of comprehension spread on the faces of my friends.
“So we just need someone whose about to be killed and then save them with another person or…” Leo says slowly.
“See? That’s the problem. It won’t work right now, because first we don’t know who the sacrifice will be, and second we don’t want anybody dying and third, Gaea might be expecting something like this. That’s why I didn’t want to tell you guys. It just won’t work.” Or maybe now that you guys know, you’ll willingly give yourself up, I think, but I don’t say it out loud. I knew that Percy’s fatal flaw was loyalty to friends, and that he might do something like that. “Anyway, she won’t fall for it again. So I say we think of something fast. If we can’t do that the there’s always the charm-speak lullaby,” I said looking hopefully towards Piper.
“And if that doesn’t work then we really need to get some sleeping pills,” Leo said as everybody gave him and are-you-serious look. “What?” he says throwing up his hands. “Just saying.”
