Dog Days
Fall of 89'
September 24th
The brick wall was cold and gritty against my back but it felt nice.
The whole situation had me feeling a bit hot, so any kind of distraction was welcome.
Strewn across the parking lot were small flocks of teenagers, wriggling their hands impatiently, eyeballing the road with certain anxiousness.
Some were only curious, not really intending to do more than look on from the hoods of their cars.
Then there were there were the malicious groups, practically crowding the parking spaces like a goddamn welcoming committee.
I only wondered why the hell they'd be this psyched over some girl. With the way some people treated this, you'd think she's some fucking movie star!
Now, everyone gets excited when a new girl joins the school. Even shits like me.
But this, this is just pathetic.
I shook my head, taking a drag off my cigarette.
"So what d'ya think about this 'Haushinka chick'?"
A voice rang from somewhere behind me.
I peered over my shoulder at Mike, slumping against the wall where I had been only minutes ago.
Guess I was a bit intrigued about all this myself.
But only about what they were so excited about.
I thought of a response but nothing came up, I only shrugged and turned back.
"But really? What do you think about all this?"
"I think it's a load of bullshit. She's just a girl." I laughed at the stupidity of it all and took another drag. I imagined the smoke swirling around my body.
"A load of bullshit, huh?" Mike says so damn quietly and slumped the way hell down the wall.
"What's that?"
"I dunno...It kinda is a big deal. Y'know? They said somethings wrong with her. Like, not autism or she's stupid or anything."
"What?" I furrow my eyebrows.
The hell are you going on about?
"Do you know what's wrong with her?"
Mike nodded, "Well kinda...Um. It's not really confirmed yet. No one told ya about her or anything?" Mike frowned and murmured, "Boy..."
A dry laugh escaped my lips as I placed a new unlit cigarette between them.
"No. Is there somethin' I gotta know, Michael?"
I mumbled through the cigarette, cupping my hand over and lighting it.
Mike sighed and itched his elbow.
He was always itching around when he got excited. It was like a new habit or something. And it really gets on my nerves these days.
"Alright, I gotta tell ya. So this girl..." I nod a bit too eagerly.
Mike continues, "Her name's Haushinka Katotoku and everyone thinks she's all that cause she's the Judge's daughter, Rich and all!" Mike laughed and grabbed my pack of cigarettes and stuck one in his mouth, lighting it.
It ticked me off a bit but I chose to ignore it.
"God, that damn it? Who gives a shit if her Daddy's rich?" I scoffed. "Katotoku? She Asian?"
"No! Billie Joe...Yes but..." he grabbed my leg and shook me around a bit. "That's not all! The reason everyone's so worked up–they say she's–HOLY SHIT!" Mike screamed, damn near scaring me to death.
