Due to the fact that my father and me are going through emotional stress. I couldn't even tell him about the strangeness of my day. I guess that leaves me stuck here. Forever. I'm soon to be another brainwashed old fashioned boy. I roll over in my bed cringing at the thought of me wearing pressed khakis.
I could runaway but I can't leave Dad or Mom. Well, I'm sure I could live with leaving Mom.
A tap on my window draws my attention from my thoughts. Matthew sits perched outside.
"Matthew?" He looks ghostly pale under the moonlight, almost like a vampire.
I get out of bed quietly walking over the window. Matthews mouth for me to open it and so I do. Before I can open it all the way he comes falling on my floor. As if hitting my floor didn't create enough sound, he uses my dresser to stand causing a assortment of possessions to fall.
"Are you crazy! Couldn't you have knocked on my front door like a normal person?!" I whisper harshly biting my knuckles and hoping Dad is in a very deep sleep
Matthew stands ignoring me. I roll my eyes groaning.
"What are you doing here?" I ask
"We have a lot to talk about,"He tells me sitting on my bed
"Um, okay." I scratch my head feeling uncomfortable. The only other people who have sat on my bed, are my friends and it takes a great amount of trust to sit on my bed.
"Weren't you wondering where I was like all the rest of the day?" Matthew says.
"Not really, considering the fact I don't know what classes we share"
"Aslo, you could of skipped" I add
"Fair point" He nods
Matthew across my mattress comforter kicking off his shoes. For a guest- No not even a guest. As a intruder, he is getting mighty comfortable.
"This is comfy" He yawns
"Get to the point, okay? I got to sleep" I snap aggravated
"Fine" He sits up becoming serious
"So, me and Kenneth had to stay behind because we were in trouble" He laughs shaking his head "anyway, she gave this long lecture on why not to talk in class then get this, she brought pies out her closet and told us to eat"
Pies. As punishment for disrupting class. This place couldn't get anymore weirder.
"That's crazy but I already labeled this whole place as that, so if you don't mind I've accepted my inevitable doom in this place," I try ushering him back to the window but he moves away from me
"I'm not done," He takes a deep breath "I didn't eat the pie but Kenneth did, he became all apologetic and scarfed it down"
I lean against the wall beside my open window, peering outside at the rows of dark houses, the starry sky, the swaying trees and rippling grass. The views here sure beat the city.
"Morris, are you listening?" Matthew snaps his fingers in my face. They smell like blueberries. I blink fixing my focus back on him.
"Yeah, I am. Let me guess what happen next, Kenneth got amnesia and became a member of a sacrificial cult" I say only half joking
"No," He frowns "I don't get you Morris, you were all ears before and now you got a attitude acting like you don't want to hear me"
"Because I dont" I sigh "I'm sorry but I don't okay I mean what if there's nothing wrong here just mabye this is a-"
"A very old fashioned community," He finishes for me "your sounding just like the rest of them!"
"Look, Its hopeless" I scoff "We can come up with conspiracy after conspiracy but it doesn't change the fact that we are stuck here!" I lower my volume remembering Dad's still here.
"No, we aren't" Matthew reaches in his pocket pulling out a pair of car keys "I stole them"
I shut my mouth. The keys in his hand jingle tempting me. Not like I can drive.
"I can drive, too" He says reading my mind
"Sure, let's run away" I say sacrastically rubbing my throbbing temples "Two boys with no money, no job experience, no destination."
"God! Your hopeless! I came here looking for help and your being a complete jack-" He's cut off by the sound of a engine purring to life outside. My first instinct is to duck and Matthew does the same.
"Who is it?" I shrug unknowing.
I take a huge risk peeking outside. A blue convertible backs out it's driveway across the street.
"Late night shift, probably" I tell Matthew who looks at the car with narrow suspicious eyes.
When the car passes the last house at the corner. Every car in the their driveway starts up in unison backing up and following the direction of the blue convertible. My blood runs cold and my jaw goes slack.
"Late night shift, huh?" Matthew hisses
More cars fall into the line of cars leaving to who-knows-where. I'm about to rush to Dad's room and show him this freaky scene when one final car starts.
I look below to see Dad's car start. No, he can't. He can't be one of them.
"That's impossible" I gasp
"Im sorry, Morris" Matthew says
I sit in shock watching my father join the cars disappearing around the corner.
